The Centre for Accessible Learning facilitates disability-related accommodations and supports that create a fair and equitable academic experience for students with disabilities at SFU. Working together as a close team, and collaboratively with colleagues across SFU, our efforts uphold SFU’s commitment to equity and inclusion, as we work with students, instructors and other campus units to explore ways to remove disability-related barriers in all aspects of university life.

About the Role

The Disabilities Services Officer (DSO) plays a critical role within CAL. The position identifies and implements appropriate specialized services and supports for students with disabilities, and leads the centre’s complex examination processes. Through this work, the DSO upholds the institution’s legal obligation to provide services, programs and facilities free from discrimination for students with disabilities. As the unit expert on assistive technologies, the DSO identifies best practices, liaises with other post-secondary institutions, as well as learning and medical professionals to tailor authorized academic services and accommodations. As a strong collaborator, this position uses exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to work with other SFU departments, and individual instructors, to ensure students receive entitled accommodations.

The ideal candidate is a strong team player with outstanding interpersonal skills, and good knowledge of the legal and policy implications of CAL’s work. They are a respectful and highly professional communicator who has significant experience managing conflict and enforcing policy. They are experienced working with neurodivergence and disability and are passionate about removing barriers for students with disabilities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Sciences, or a related discipline, and two years of related experience in areas such as project management and the handling of sensitive confidential information involving equity and diversity issues, database management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills using diplomacy and discretion.
  • Ability to apply and EDI lens to work sensitively and effectively with diverse populations, including people who are neurodivergent.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise initiative, and sound judgment to prioritize projects and work demands and to recognize issues and elevate issues as appropriate.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures.
