Job title: eRA (Electronic Research Admin) Business Analyst

Job description: Who We Are

Research Operations and the Office of the VPRI encompass over 150 people who support 1200 researchers and 5000 graduate students in seeking and managing an annual $160M in research activity. The RO Admin Group leads and supports this team with project management, technical, financial, legal and other professionals.

About the Role

This BA position is truly a versatile specialist role, encompassing both people and technical aspects. It combines elements of a business analyst, software developer, database administrator and webmaster. As SFU pivots from homegrown to commercial cloud-based research administration software, we need an individual who can understand both the business processes and the tools. In this role you will interact with end-users (researchers, academic departments) and with other RO staff that rely on the software to do their jobs. At times you provide technical support, but the primary role is to understand complex business processes, configure the system to meet those needs, write apps when the system tools are not sufficient to answer specific questions or to interface with other systems, and liaise with dev teams and university IT.

You are a self-starter, able to work independently but also truly enjoy working with and supporting a wide range of people on a variety of teams. You enjoy coding and developing utility applications to solve problems, but it’s not the core of what you do – it’s one of your tools. You work to understand business processes better than those that actually do them, and you take pride in making them better for all concerned, and in the accuracy of the information produced.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Accounting, Finance, Business, Research Administration or related fields/disciplines with three years of progressively responsible experience working primarily with enterprise software related environments.

  • We will be looking for evidence of breadth of experience with different systems and in different environments – i.e., adaptability.
  • Another key aspect is experience supporting users and solving problems. There is a significant people-facing element to this job – answering queries tactfully and efficiently, and creatively solving complex problems.
  • We will also look for evidence of experience in roles requiring initiative. While there are numerous peers across the university, this is the only BA role in Research Operations and it reports to an Executive Director. As such it requires a well-organized self-starter.

What We Offer

At SFU, our goal is to ensure our people are valued and supported by promoting a healthy work-life balance, professional growth and development, as well as a safe and respectful workplace. We offer continuing employees who belong in the Administrative & Professional Staff Association (APSA):
