Job description: The Opportunity:
McElhanney is looking for a Geomatics Technologist to join our Survey Team in Vancouver Island, BC. This is a great opportunity for an experienced individual who would like to be exposed to field experience. Within this role, you will be involved in surveying at local locations primarily for resource industry related facilities, construction layouts, land development and scanning work. There is also a significant opportunity to work on projects using drones and scanning technology. What You’re Fired Up To:

  • Take direction from Project Manager to understand the following: project objectives, allocated budgets, goals, schedules, and timeframes
  • Communicate scope and schedule information to team members, set expectations, and ensure project tasks are completed on time
  • Manage information flow from field to office and prepare clear, concise, and accurate field notes, records and calculations
  • Interpret field data in order to create accurate survey drawings and legal plans, which will include downloading and editing field data, interpreting field notes and sketches, and processing conventional and GPS data
  • Interpret Engineering plans for layout and quantities as well as quality assurance checks on civil construction projects
  • Complete calculations as needed and prepare for drafting or client project reporting
  • Liaising with Project Managers and clients regarding enquiries and issues;
  • Implementing and ensuring quality assurance on all field returns
  • Take instructions from the project manager for performance of office tasks.
  • Ensure implementation of quality assurance, safety, and policy compliance.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Two-year technical diploma in Geomatics or Civil Engineering with at least 5 years of previous experience in a similar role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Capable of working independently and taking ownership of tasks with support from office staff
  • Physical ability to work in on busy sites with varied terrain and ability to lift heavy equipment.
  • Confidence performing high precision surveys for layouts and control surveys
  • Experience with Civil 3D, MicroSurvey and Trimble Business Centre is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, good attendance, sound judgment skills, and general computer knowledge
  • Ability to travel for field positions, sometimes for extended periods
  • Ability to work effectively in various geographical settings, weather conditions, and climates.
