Job title: GS392: Arts Global Experience Placement Course Instructor

Job description: Faculty/Academic Area: Faculty of Arts

Department: Global Studies

Campus: Waterloo

Employee Group: WLUFA

Requisition ID: 7286

Position Title: GS392: Arts Global Experience Placement Course Instructor

Faculty/Academic Area: Faculty of Arts

Department: Global Studies – Arts Global Experience

Term: Spring 2024

Days/Times: Field Supervision/Varied

Campus: Waterloo

Hours per week/Hours Total: 36

Anticipated Class Size: 30

Course Description: Academic study linked to an experiential learning placement for students enrolled in the Arts Global Experience, involving a significant component of service, work or other field-based learning.

Position Summary: The number of placement students will be provided when placement arrangements are finalized. The role of the Course Instructor is to oversee and evaluate students’ academic work during their experiential learning placements. This role is carried out via remote delivery.(There is an expectation that the Course Instructor is available to attend one meeting remotely in May 2024 to prepare for this role).

The Course Instructor’s principal role is to advise and evaluate students on completion of academic assignments related to their placements. Secondarily, Course Instructors are to provide a touchpoint for students on placements that complements the principal support they receive from the AGX placement coordinator. This involves checking in with students via email or remote internet link, approximately every 2-3 weeks during their placements, with a focus on progress to meet academic goals within the placement course. As the content of student work relates to the placement itself, these check-ins will involve discussing the students’ placement experiences and guiding them in their processes of reflection.

Course assignments are pre-determined, as they are the middle step within a suite of scaffolded assignments in courses that begin in the semester before placement and conclude in the semester after placement. No course preparation is required and there is no classroom instruction. Course delivery is staggered, with timelines that will be unique to each student’s placement start-date and duration. At the very start of the semester, the Course Instructor is responsible for overseeing students’ completion of an initial assignment that sets out each student’s work plan and due dates for the rest of their academic work.

The Course Instructor is required to use Laurier’s Learning Management System (MyLS), Laurier email, and Laurier Zoom or Teams accounts, to contact, interact with, and evaluate students on placement. Communication through the remote means should be maintained with placement students throughout the duration of their placements. Feedback on assignments should be provided within 2-3 days of submission, as the tight timeline of some placements means that students need feedback promptly for it to be incorporated in their approach to subsequent work.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Have knowledge of and adhere to policies, procedures, and general information pertaining to academic instruction at Laurier;
  • Provide timely evaluation and feedback on academic work completed by students;
  • Check in remotely with students every 2-3 weeks via email or virtual link, to discuss their academic progress;
  • Be available for further student requests to meet, in lieu of holding regular office hours;
  • Use MyLS to track, evaluate, and comment on student work;
  • Liaise with the AGX Placement Coordinator periodically regarding student placement timelines;
  • Liaise with the AGX Placement Coordinator, the International Education Studies Program Coordinator, and the Global Studies Undergraduate Academic Advisor, in case of any signs that students may be at academic risk, in emotional distress, or otherwise in need of further support;

Qualifications – Required:

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Social Sciences, Humanities, or International Education.

Qualifications – Preferred or an asset:

Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience related to supervising experiential learning placements, international exchanges, field courses, or the equivalent.
