McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), located on the McMaster University campus in Hamilton’s beautiful Westdale neighbourhood, has been providing care to children from across the region since 1988. Here, patients ranging in age from infancy to 18 years and benefit from a family-centred approach that prioritizes the child’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
The hospital is home to the fastest-growing kids-only emergency department in Ontario, one of Canada’s most advanced neonatal intensive care units, and a range of programs and clinics with unique expertise in a number of areas including children’s cancer, digestive diseases, and mental health.
Unit Summary
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is a robust department, comprised of 12 level 3 critical care beds, and 4 level 2 step down beds, a Pediatric Critical Care Response team and a newly formed Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, all which provide medical and surgical care to children and their families across southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family centered care with a strong focus on evidence based best practice and continuous improvement initiatives. The unit provides specialized care to complex, surgical, oncologic, orthopedic, trauma and medical pediatric patient populations utilizing a collaborative approach. The PICU team engages in advanced therapies including continuous renal replacement therapy, therapeutic plasma exchange, and organ donation.

Position Summary

As a member of the health care team, supports patient care through equipment and supply management, maintenance of a clean, safe environment and participation in selected patient care activities. The HCA provides unit support to patients, families and those providing service and/or care. Functions according to the job description for Technical Health Care Aides.

Qualifications

1. Grade 10 education
2. Completed CSAO Techniques course
3. Minimum of 2 years technical experience in a similar role (the handling and care of delicate equipment) within a health care environment
4. Experience maintaining and stocking materials and supplies
5. Computer familiarity or willingness to learn computer skills as required
6. Working knowledge of Universal Precautions and WHMIS
7. Must be able to read and write English proficiently
8. Demonstrated effective communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills
9. Demonstrated initiative and judgment appropriate for the position
10. Ability to accept assigned or delegated functions, set priorities and organize work accordingly
11. Ability to lift using appropriate lifting techniques and bend, push and pull using good body techniques
