Job description: Your Opportunity:

As the Health Information Management Professional I (HIM I) you will work under the direction of the Team Lead, Data Collection, and Manager, Health Information Management, South Zone at the Chinook Regional Hospital. This acute care facility is located in Lethbridge, Alberta and offers 24-hour emergency services, intensive care unit, obstetrical, palliative and surgical services. You will also assist with Data Collection initiatives across the South Zone. You will review, code and abstract clinical data from patient records assigning diagnoses using the ICD-10-CA/ CCI classification system according to Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) rules and guidelines. You will employ methodical attention to detail to recognize validity, integrity and reliability of coded data. The HIM professional performs daily and month-end close out checks and reconciliation procedures for inpatient and ambulatory care abstracts to maintain a high standard of quality ensuring submission deadlines and productivity standards are achieved. You will have the opportunity to participate in Health Information Management initiatives by attending and participating in committees, working groups, and team meetings. Your leadership abilities will be on display as you assist with training of new students and staff. Maintaining confidentiality of all Alberta Health Services (AHS) information in accordance with the Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is paramount.

Description:

As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). Additional Required Qualifications:

Thorough knowledge of current Canadian Coding standards and DAD/NACRS for the collection of diagnoses, interventions and specific data elements. Proficiency with personal computer (Windows, MS Office). Knowledge of related legislation regarding access, privacy and disclosure of patient information. A coding proficiency test will be administered during the interview process. Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of 6 months coding and abstracting experience. Experience with electronic health records. Other key competencies for this role include: evidence of commitment to professional and self-development along with continued education and learning in the field of Health Information Management.
