Job description: Role: IT Systems Administrator

We are looking for an IT Systems Administrator to join our busy and dynamic team based in our Richmond Hill office.

Why we need you:

You will work as a part of the team that plans and implements a wide variety of complex multi-component projects in IT Infrastructure including, but not limited to design, monitoring, automation and configuration in a highly available production environment.

Your responsibilities will include analysing, designing and developing both new systems and modifications to existing systems along with supporting, maintaining, and optimizing applications, services, servers, and networks. You’ll be architecting, implementing, diagnosing, troubleshooting and documenting complex IT solutions. Evaluating, prototyping, and recommending new technologies will also be an important element of your role.

You’ll be reviewing and documenting the functionality of existing environments while proposing enhancements and improving best practices. Alongside this, you’ll work with databases and a variety of storage systems plus implementing, maintaining monitoring and alerting capabilities.

Who are we looking for:

You’ll have working experience in an IT infrastructure role with strong background in system engineering or a degree in Computer Science or the Engineering field. Open source technologies are something you are interested in and you have used wide variety of such tools. You have experience with virtualized environments such as VMWare. You have experience with network storage, and knowledge of filesystems and network protocols. Some of your experience is focused on coding and scripting (mostly Python, Bash, or Java). You are familiar with web servers such as Nginx and Tomcat, as well as caching and message queuing applications such as Redis, RabbitMQ, Kafka. Also you have some experience in networking and monitoring tools. We are working with Atlassian products (Crowd, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket Server, Bamboo, HipChat) so it’ll be good if you have used them too.

We try to follow the best methodologies and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service but you’ll be able to suggest any improvements. Our environment is agile so it’ll be good if you have worked in such teams. You are a self-starter with the ability to make progress with minimal supervision. On this position you’ll have to show your good diplomacy skills and the ability to liaise with technical and business people. You are able to work under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. As a team we are results oriented and rely on good communication to achieve success.

As the ideal candidate, you will have:

Experience and knowledge of some of the following:

  • Filesystems (ZFS, EXT4, NTFS, ReFS, LVM)
  • CIFS, Samba, NFS, SFTP, iSCSI protocols
  • SQL in general and PostgreSQL, MySQL specifically
  • TCP/IP, routing, networking and balancing
  • Time-Series Databases (InfluxDB, Prometheus) and ElasticSearch
  • Security protocols and certificates: TLS, HTTPS, SSH

Along with familiarity with NoSQL databases, JSON based systems, cloud services, server’s hardware architecture and operating systems such as MS Windows, MacOS, BSD, etc and git/versioning software. An added benefit would be awareness of automation/configuration management such as Salt, Chef, Ansible, or Puppet along with familiarity with metrics visualization and graphing tools such as Grafana, Kibana, Chronograf, etc. Certification in Linux, VMware and good knowledge of Mac OS X is a strong asset.
