Your Opportunity:
Working under the direction of the Director, Experiential Education & Community Engagement and as part of the Experiential Education Unit (EEU), the Manager, Experiential Education acts as a University of Toronto Mississauga campus-wide resource for matters pertaining to student placements on- and off-campus. Specifically, the Manager will be the primary contact for inquiries and advice pertaining to policies and procedures related to student placements. The incumbent is responsible for planning and overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of employer-partner engagement with UTM’s Office of the Dean. The Manager works collaboratively with various UTM academic units and campus partners in the development of campus strategies and annual plans aimed at increasing employer recruitment and partner-engagement activities while also furthering accessibility, equity, and inclusion. The Manager will seek opportunities for integrative programming with other departments in the division as well as across the U of T.
The Manager will be responsible for training staff regarding the policies and procedures pertaining to student placements in addition to other forms of curricular EL activities on campus. The Manager will also make recommendations on modifications to business processes in the EEU, Office of the Dean, UTM, related to student placements. The incumbent will lead Experiential Learning Officers (ELO), in addition to other Experiential Learning staff within their portfolio, to support the integration of student interests, abilities, experiences, and values in the development of their work-integrated learning goals. They will further support students in their development of engaged citizenship and understanding of their connection to the community.
You will contribute to the mission by:
- Working with offices across the University, to review and advise on placements ensuring compliance with all the University policies and guidelines as well as external requirements. The incumbent will advise departments in Workplace Insurance coverage for student placements and will be responsible for timely processing of any claims
- Overseeing the development and delivery of innovative and responsive career, employment, and further education programs, services, events and resources with a focus on expanding opportunities for students’ self-directed and experiential learning. This includes the development of both domestic and international experiential learning opportunities such as academic internships, field experiences, partnership-based experiences, and research-intensive opportunities in order to meet the needs of a diverse student population
- Working with senior staff to develop EEU policies, guidelines, and procedures to govern the management and administration of EEU programs/services of the Office of the Dean and UTM
- Creating and recommending opportunities to engage students, employers, and the Experiential Learning Group and gain their feedback in the development of work-integrated learning experiences and further education programming and resources for a diverse student population
- Obtaining, verifying and maintaining University-wide data on placements (agreements, workplace insurance arrangements, etc.) and related data required for reporting
- Developing and maintaining reports for the Director, Experiential Education & Community Engagement, based on knowledge of Experiential Education program/services, operational statistics, and short and long-term objectives
- Direct marketing and publicity of EEU activities and programs as part of a comprehensive communications strategy that utilizes a variety of print and online tools to reach students, employers and hosts with a focus on expanding potential opportunities for students’ self-directed and experiential learning and utilizing best practices and trends
- Managing the staff in the EL portfolio, including casual and student hires. Defining duties and responsibilities of staff including defining hours of work, the schedules of work, and the methods and techniques of work
- Providing input to the Director, Experiential Education & Community Engagement on the operational budget, based on knowledge of EEU operations, objectives, and priorities. Reconciling the unit budget and allocating the unit’s marketing budget
What you will bring to the role:
- University degree in Business Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 5 years management experience preferably within experiential education or business environment managing/supervising unionized teams
- Experience in developing experiential and student self-directed career learning opportunities.
- Experience in policy review, policy interpretation, and review of legal documentation.
- Experience in the design and development of tracking and monitoring systems for large volumes of documentation.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning. Knowledge in program development and assessment/evaluation strategies.
- Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy and communication skills.
- Ability to make complex, independent decisions.
- Strong ability to lead, motivate and set high performance standards for self and others.
- Demonstrate and encourage creativity and innovative thinking
