Job description: The University of Guelph is the fifth largest university in Ontario with respect to area, the main campus consisting of approximately 412 hectares, with 148 buildings totaling approximately 7.0 million square feet of floor area. The University’s Central Utilities Plant delivers steam, chilled water, and other services to the vast majority of campus buildings through a network of underground tunnels and trenches.

We seek a Manager of Mechanical Design who, reporting to the Director, Design, Engineering and Construction, is responsible for the management of the mechanical design group and its respective client relationships, and is part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for management and delivery of a variety of capital, planning, and maintenance-related projects. The Manager is also responsible for managing a staff of two, as well as engaging and managing external consultants and contactors who deliver numerous projects, both major and minor. Other responsibilities include: participating in pre-project evaluations and feasibility studies; evaluating project proposals and recommending appropriate design and construction options; preparing project briefs; undertaking compliance and technical reviews; preparing budgets; participating on University committees; generally serving as the institution’s mechanical expert; and other associated duties as assigned.

Requirements of the position include: An Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, coupled with P. Eng. Designation, and a minimum eight (8) years of demonstrated progressive experience in the design and construction of institutional projects, together with management experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must have experience in project analysis, estimating, scheduling and construction detailing. Sound knowledge of central plant operation, design codes and legislation are also required, as is a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The incumbent must also be a collaborative team player with excellent leadership and administrative skills, including superior communication skills, both oral and written; supervisory experience, preferably in a union environment; and an orientation toward problem-solving.
