The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $59,180 – $66,608 starting salary determined by the PEA .

Performance range: starting salary to max of $77,666 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Student Services department, within the Division of Student Affairs, includes a diverse range of services including Health, Counselling, Residence, Centre for Accessible Learning, the Office of Student Life, Academic Advising for the Faculties of Humanities, Science and Social Sciences and International Student Services.

The Office of Student Life (OSL) provides student transition programming and support for new to UVic students facilitating their successful transition through pre-arrival and arrival orientation programs and events, as well as first-year experience programs and activities. OSL is also responsible for providing pro-active educational programming for students by developing and delivering programs to advance UVic’s response to student mental health issues, sexualized violence awareness and prevention and in other areas that support under-represented student populations. OSL is also responsible for the investigation and resolution of non-academic misconduct allegations and supports the coordination and response for high-risk student issues that require case management support.

Reporting to the Manager, Student Life and Engagement, and in support of departmental and divisional goals, the Orientation Program Manager is responsible for leading and managing the planning, development, implementation and assessment of Orientation programs and initiatives.

The Orientation Program Manager is responsible for the overall management of strategies and initiatives aimed at shaping an engaging and supportive orientation for all new students of the University of Victoria. The Program Manager develops and implements cross-institutional initiatives for new students by liaising and collaborating with partners and stakeholders across the university campus community. The Program Manager works closely with campus and faculty partners to ensure a collaborative and consistent approach to welcoming new students across campus. The Program Manager ensures that UVic Orientation delivers comprehensive, consistent, timely and relevant programs that promote new students’ sense of preparedness and sense of belonging at UVic. The Program Manager provides expertise and guidance across campus on benchmarks and promising practices for engagement with first year students.

Job Requirements

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (leadership, higher or adult education, psychology) plus a minimum of five years of related experience in a post-secondary institution, including one to two years’ experience supervising professional staff and one to two years’ experience in the development and delivery of co-curricular engagement programs and initiatives. This position also requires one to two years’ experience evaluating and assessing learning outcomes and program objectives under a CAS Standards framework.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Demonstrated experience in program coordination, implementation, assessment and administrative experience, particularly in higher education and academic success programs.
Experience with curriculum development for training or co-curricular programs
Proven training and teaching ability; experience designing and implementing training programs for professional staff
Demonstrated competence in working with a diverse population; ability to recognize and meet a variety of training and educational needs to support organizational goals
Demonstrated ability to work closely and effectively with multiple departments, organizations and individuals, including faculty, in a complex environment.
Ability to assess student needs, research alternatives, analyze, recommend and design methods, styles, and programs to address specific and general Orientation issues.
Proven leadership skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills;
Proven planning and organizational skills.
Strong administrative and computer application skills
Collaborative communication and management style.
Knowledge of student development theories (psychosocial theories, cognitive / structural theories and ecological / integrative theories) an asset.
Strong digital skills, including creating presentations using a variety of software and technology platforms.
Ability to work independently and complete projects within structured timelines.
Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required.

Knowledge requirements include:
Knowledge of student life cycle and student development theories (psychosocial theories, cognitive / structural theories and ecological / integrative theories)
Knowledge of theories and best practices around the first year experience and student retention
Knowledge of best practices around conflict resolution within a community environment

Competency requirements include:

Superior communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
