DUTIES
The TRU Legal Clinic Society was incorporated in March 2017 with Thompson Rivers University as its sole member. It is the legal entity whose purpose is to provide legal assistance through TRU CLC.
TRU CLC is mandated to provide legal services to low income clients, as well as opportunities for practical learning for students from the TRU Faculty of Law. This work includes case files, community outreach and public legal education.
The Outreach Worker is the primary point of contact between TRU CLC and the communities it serves and the organizations it works with in order to ensure that TRU CLC is serving those communities and organizations to the fullest extent possible and that students participating in TRU CLC have the opportunity to work on a broad range of client files.
The Outreach Worker is responsible for liaising with community groups and individual clients in Kamloops and the broader Thompson Nicola Cariboo region, so that:
- those individuals and organizations are aware of the legal services TRU CLC can provide to low-income clients;
- TRU CLC has a broader knowledge of the various social services that are available for its clients; and
- individual clients of TRU CLC who require non-legal social services may be connected with the appropriate organizations.
- The starting salary for this position is $30,000 to $24,000 depending on whether the successful candidate chooses to take the benefits package and RRSP matching option.
This position is responsible for conducting the community outreach operations of TRU CLC, including:
- meeting with community groups in Kamloops and the surrounding area in order to promote the services of TRU CLC and to improve TRU CLC’s understanding of the services those organizations provide;
- organizing public legal education events to be presented by TRU CLC students;
- developing promotional and educational materials;
- arranging referrals to social services organizations for those clients who attend TRU CLC and require services beyond the scope of TRU CLC’s legal services;
- training TRU CLC students in identifying clients who may require non-legal services and making effective referrals to such services; and
- other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
As this is a part-time position the Outreach Worker will be expected to work an average of 16 hours per week
