Your Opportunity
Reporting to our Calgary, Alberta office, the role of Palaeontologist at Stantec is a junior position, suitable for a graduate student or recent graduate. You will provide field support to our Senior Palaeontologists and learn the role. The position is part-time, with the potential to expand to a full-time, permanent Senior Palaeontologist position. We are looking for a candidate who has a solid background in palaeontology field techniques and can work independently without direct supervision.
Candidates must be able and willing to work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often at construction sites during which independent work alongside a construction crew will be necessary. Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to workplace safety.
This is a part-time contract opportunity for 6 months with the potential for extension and /or conversion.
Your Key Responsibilities
Provide palaeontological expertise at construction sites to search for, record, and salvage fossil sites as needed
Assist Senior Palaeontologists with fossil site excavation, pre-impact field assessments, laboratory tasks, and reporting
Interact and interface with construction contacts and Stantec palaeontologists and project managers
Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
Execute specific technical tasks or requirements for medium to large projects
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Recent graduate degree in palaeontology, geology, or related field; OR a graduate degree in progress
Strong adherence to health and safety policies and procedures
Skilled in communications
Flexible and thrives in a dynamic work environment
Ability to follow verbal directions
Ability to use field data collection equipment such as GPS and camera
At least six weeks of palaeontological field experience preferred
Good driving record and valid driver’s license required
Education and Experience
MSc or PhD in geology, palaeontology, or related field; OR degree in progress. We may consider a candidate with a bachelor’s degree; however, a graduate degree is required to hold a palaeontological permit and attain the Senior Palaeontologist position.
Minimum 2 years’ experience in palaeontology preferred.
Combination of office and field experience.
Working towards qualifications to hold a paleontological permit in Alberta and other jurisdictions.
Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
