Job title: Project Biologist – Calgary

Job description: If you’re like us, you don’t have much time for the way things are.

Ausenco is a global company redefining what’s possible. Our team is based across 26 offices in 14 countries, with projects in over 80 locations worldwide. Combining our deep technical expertise with a 30-year track record, we deliver innovative, value-add consulting studies, project delivery, asset operations and maintenance solutions to the mining & metals, oil & gas, and industrial sectors.

You are an experienced Wildlife Biologist who is looking to be a part of high-performing team supporting both large and small projects. You have strong prairies wildlife survey experience and are looking to further develop your skills. You are looking for ways to advance your career and to take on new challenges within a company that shares your values.

About the role

As a Project Biologist, you will have the opportunity to take on a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities, with a significant leadership role:

  • Hold overall technical responsibility and ownership for the data management, technical quality and execution, and general oversight of project field programs.
  • Supervising the execution of wildlife surveys following the Alberta Sensitive Species Inventory Guidelines (i.e., bird migration, breeding birds, burrowing owls, sharp-tailed grouse, sensitive raptors) and other provincial guidance. This includes providing survey kick-offs, coordination of data entry, and providing guidance to field biologists and other staff during peak field season.
  • Providing technical support on projects that interact with biophysical environments (e.g. managing wildlife features). Complete QA/QC reviews of data collection and checks on field staff.
  • Develop training materials and provide growth opportunities for junior biologists. Advise team managers on the need for Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) within the Environmental Planning and Ecology team and developing approved SOPs. Lead and supervise field training for surveys and health & safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate leadership in health and safety. Find and fix health and safety issues proactively.
  • Implementing and supporting Ausenco processes and approaches (e.g., project management, quality program) to ensure that project estimates for schedule, cost, and quality objectives for project deliverables are completed in timely manner. Identify potential schedule, cost, or quality concerns to Project Managers and build solutions to resolve these concerns.
  • Further developing your reporting skills to complete technical reports and analysis, provide peer review and mentorship to junior biologists, and completing estimates and technical content for proposals. You will be guided by more senior staff and mentored in project strategy and technical writing to further develop your own skills.
  • Support Project Managers, Senior Wildlife Ecologists, and Clients with expertise in Project surveys, data, analysis, and regulatory impacts.
