Additional Information

This position is shared between Inpatient and Outpatient services – Mental Health & Addictions; the homebase can either be 708 Reeves Street, Port Hawkesbury or St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.

Travel is required, must have access to reliable vehicle.

Responsibilities

The Recreation Therapist is a member of the collaborative health care team, providing support to patients, families and inter-professional team members through therapeutic intervention to support holistic functioning of patients. The recreation therapist provides assessment, intervention plan development, evidence-informed interventions and evaluation of recreation therapy services. Interventions are provided to groups or individuals in an inpatient, outpatient or community setting, related to the patient’s leisure needs and overall plan of care. The recreation therapist is responsible to oversee the delivery of the overall recreation therapy service for a program or team. Where the role requires a recreation therapist designation, the provider works within the standards and competencies of a recreation therapist.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in Recreation specializing (Major) in Therapeutic Recreation
  • Certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC)
  • Applicants must have completed an internship as per NCTRC guidelines, under supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist as part of their degree program
  • Standard First Aid
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVSI)
  • BCLS CPR
  • Experience in Mental Health preferred
  • Knowledge of leisure/recreation assessments
  • Knowledge of leisure education and leisure counseling processes
  • Knowledge of various health conditions and their impact on health and well being
  • Effective counseling and verbal/written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and promote good interpersonal relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to select suitable activities
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours of Work

Permanent full-time (100%); 75.00 hours bi-weekly.

Salary Information

Recreation Therapist:

$31.20 – $39.40 hourly
