Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse reports to the Health Service Manager or delegate of the Psychiatric Emergency Service. The Psychiatric Emergency Service is located at the Halifax Infirmary Emergency Department. This is a 24/7 service with a full rotational schedule. The candidate is responsible for assessment and triage of patients presenting with psychiatric emergencies. The RN conducts emergency psychiatric assessments through the completion of a comprehensive assessment and mental status exam. The RN collaborates with physicians, other Mental Health and Addiction Program services, the patient, family, formal and informal supports and team members to identify priorities for intervention and a plan for care. Within a collaborative problem-solving framework, the nurse uses a wide range of psychiatric nursing interventions to promote resolution of immediate care needs. Working as a member of an inter-professional team, the RN collaborates with other disciplines while providing comprehensive nursing care as well participates in team activities as required i.e. service planning, quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing
  • Current registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses
  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred
  • BLS-C (HCP) certification
  • One year Acute mental health Inpatient experience required.
  • Critical thinker with an ability to work with clients to resolve or stabilize crisis and other difficulties
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • A capacity for coping with challenging clinical situations
  • Flexibility, adaptability, good critical judgment
  • Ability to effectively contribute as a member of the team
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Permanent, Full Time (100%) Position; 75 hours bi-weekly

Salary Information

$35.0366 – $41.4138 Hourly
($42.8633 with 25 years of nursing experience)
