Beautiful St. Paul is located approximately 200 km northeast of Edmonton, located centrally in the Lakeland Region with a population of over 5,800. The county of St. Paul is abundant with lakes and rivers, forests and rolling hills for the outdoor enthusiast. Generalist Public Health Nurse based in or out of the St Paul Public Health office, is Alberta Health Services frontline representative in delivering public health services in the diverse communities of the North Zone. The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a key position working in partnership with a multidisciplinary team and community stakeholders. The incumbent will: effectively use the nursing process to deliver quality care; provide safe, ethical and patient/family centered health care; independently provide health assessment, health planning, health education, supportive counseling, preventative and screening measures, referrals and evaluation as appropriate. Also provides services to individuals, families, groups and communities with attention to diversity and the social determinants of health. Duties include but are not limited to the generalist role of public health nursing. Provision of universal Public Health services includes immunization for all age groups, influenza program delivery, and health promotion initiatives. Communicable Disease Control – outbreak management, notifiable disease follow up. Maternal/Infant Health including postpartum support, lactation education, prenatal education, and high risk assessment of mother, babies, and families in the home environment. Travel Health – immunization and travel health counselling. Sexual and Reproductive Health – may be required to provide STI test and treat, Women’s Wellness, contraception support, pregnancy testing and education in schools and communities. Health promotion and injury prevention.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

A minimum of 2 years’ experience within the last 5 years working in a public health nursing unit performing duties supporting Communicable Disease Control, immunization, Healthy Beginnings and Child Health Clinic. Must possess strong critical thinking, assessment, communication (oral and written), organizational, problem solving and counseling skills. Must be able to work as part of an interdisciplinary team and independently with minimal supervision. Able to perform physical duties including moving clinical supplies to community clinics and home visits (this may involve moving up to 50 lbs. at times), service delivery (may require awkward and repetitive movements), sitting, standing and/or bending for long periods of time. Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred, however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in community sector will be considered. Recent nursing experience including prenatal, labour & delivery, postpartum or working with young families or the pediatric population preferred. Maternal/newborn certifications such as breastfeeding courses, lactation consultant certification and child birth education. On year experience with electronic charting (i.e. Meditech) preferred.
