Wage Benefits:

  • Wage employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.
  • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.
  • Weekend shifts are eligible for a premium of $3.25 per hour.
  • Evening shifts are eligible for a premium of $2.75 per hour.

Role Responsibilities

The Forestry and Parks Recreation, Education, and Partnerships Unit is currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our Trail Crew, a vital team committed to enhancing the recreational experiences on Alberta’s public land. We are in search of highly motivated and responsible candidates who embody enthusiasm for outdoor recreation and possess the physical fitness required for field-based roles in the South Region of Alberta. Reporting directly to the local Field Supervisor, successful candidates will actively contribute to the enhancement of Alberta’s public lands, particularly in Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ).

The role demands individuals who are not only physically fit but also capable of hiking long distances, carrying loads of up to 25 kg, and comfortable working in remote locations in all types of weather conditions. Trail Crew members may be required to work from remote field camps for periods of 4 days or more.

As a Trail Crew member, duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Follow all pertinent Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Complete daily hazard assessments and vehicle/equipment inspections
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment
  • Collect data regarding trail conditions, signage and infrastructure
  • Install or remove signage
  • Load trailers and haul material, equipment, OHVs or heavy equipment to site
  • Conduct trail maintenance using hand tool, power tools or heavy equipment
  • Assist with the construction, installation or maintenance of various types of infrastructure such as bridges, boardwalks, culverts
  • Operate power tools including chainsaws, brush saws, and other high-risk equipment
  • Operate OHVs such as quads and side by sides
  • Operate heavy machinery including tractors, skid steers, excavators
  • Clean up garbage, remove structures or abandoned trailers and vehicles
  • Complete administrative tasks such as timesheets and expense claims

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • The minimum recruitment standard for this role is a high school education with no experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR Level C and AED Certificate
  • Current Defensive Driving Certificate
  • Physically fit and able to safety carry up to 25kg

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year education

Assets:

  • Experience trail building, landscaping, carpentry and/or construction
  • Experience with backcountry navigation and working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Experience with digital data collection (i.e. ArcGIS Field Maps, Avanza)
  • Trailoring and load securement of materials and heavy equipment
  • Heavy equipment operator certification or experience
  • Comfortable with backcountry navigation and working in remote areas
  • Chainsaw safety certificate: levels 1, 2 or 3
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Transport of Dangerous Goods
  • ATV or UTV training
  • Bear Awareness Training
  • Wilderness First Aid

Terms of Employment:

There is a total of 6 seasonal wage positions available, 2 in each of the three of the following locations: Blairmore, Calgary and Rocky Mountain House. Accommodations may be available at some locations. Positions start May 2024 and continue through into October 2024. Typical work week is Monday to Thursday (10 hours per day), 40 hours per week. Some projects may require working overtime or weekends.

Training that will be provided: Chainsaw safety certificate: minimum level 2, OHV training certificate: ATV and UTV.
