We are looking for a Vice-President & Associate General Counsel, Litigation and Employment
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Legal Canadian Operations, you will lead and oversee the litigation and employment law team and have primary responsibility for managing significant, complex litigation and providing general legal advice to senior management on various issues, including effective litigation management, employment law, product support, risk mitigation, reputational and media issues, and financial reporting matters. You will have responsibility for a broad portfolio of legal matters and will interact with and provide advice to senior management on a regular basis. Your work will be wide-ranging and will provide the opportunity to develop expertise in dynamic practice areas. What you will do:
- Contribute as a senior member of the Legal Group by bringing your experience, creative legal skills, and collaborative work ethic to deliver practical solutions to our Canadian businesses.
- Lead a diverse high-performing team of legal professionals in an inclusive environment to support the businesses’ strategic objectives with a strong focus on risk identification and management.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to provide practical, risk-based legal advice and recommendations on a wide range of litigation, pre-litigation and employment matters that affect or involve the company.
- Support the company’s businesses in connection with legislative and regulatory matters, including advising on legal and regulatory developments with respect to litigation risk.
- Lead review process to meet financial reporting obligations related to establishment of provisions and financial statement disclosure.
- Instruct and manage external counsel.
- Coach and mentor team members in their practice and for career development.
- Assess, identify and implement strategic projects that support the business units and the development of the litigation function, efficiencies and capabilities.
- Collaborate with litigation peers in other regions to develop cross-jurisdiction knowledge and efficiencies.
- Assist the Senior Vice-President, Legal Canadian Operations on select legal matters, team development and leadership, and broader Legal Group initiatives.
What you will bring:
- Law Degree, Member in good standing of a provincial Bar.
- Minimum of 15 years of litigation experience (law firm or in-house).
- Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated interest in managing and coaching a team of legal
professionals in their practice and career development. * Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and present issues with clarity to senior management in all business and functional areas.
- Strong drafting, legal and communication skills with a practical solution-oriented approach and the ability to use clear, plain language.
- Excellent judgment, with the ability to identify key issues and provide an independent view to management in a clear and practical manner.
- Thorough understanding and up-to-date knowledge of court procedures and the governing regulatory environment.
- Experience with class actions; complex commercial legal issues; enforcement and regulatory proceedings and related securities litigation; employment law matters all considered strong assets.
- Superior negotiating skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Highly focused with attention to detail, ability to self-manage, prioritize, organize work, and meet deadlines.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with experience simplifying and resolving complex problems.
- Superior organizational and time management skills with experience handling multiple projects at once.
