Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for several casual positions of Learn to Sledge Instructor for winter programs at the Emera Oval. Sledge Instructors will be required to teach introductory lessons, monitor public skating sessions and activities for participants of various skill levels. Sledge Instructors will ensure that the Emera Oval is a safe, fun and festive atmosphere for skating activities and events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and instruct sledge lessons to children, youth and adults in a safe, organized and fun learning environment
- Supervise public skating/sledge sessions to ensure safety of all participants both on and off the ice
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Minimum one (1) year work or volunteer Sledge experience
- Experience working or volunteering in a leadership role
- Level 1 Coaching will be considered an asset
- Principles of Healthy Child Development an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Proficient in skating and sledge, who has mastered technical skills
- Ability to provide direction and instruction to large groups of participants
- Ability to be adaptive, creative and innovative teaching sledge lessons and leading activities on the ice
Physical Requirements:
- Stamina to skate outdoors in various weather conditions
- Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds
- Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching above shoulders and sitting
Conditions of Employment:
- Applicant must have current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR (or higher) or willing to obtain by December 3, 2023
- Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
- Applicants must be willing to attend all orientation/training sessions (dates to be determined)
- Applicants must be available on Saturdays, 10:00am – 4:00pm
Security Clearance Requirements: Selected applicants must complete an employment screening check, including a Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search to be completed by December 4, 2023.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Casual, part-time hourly
HOURS OF WORK: Seasonal, December to March. Number of weeks and hours per week will depend on the Emera Oval operational schedule and participant levels. The Emera Oval may be closed, or staff hours reduced due to weather or poor conditions, construction delays, site damage, and/or low participation levels. Sledge Instructors will not be paid if attendance at work is not required due to the above noted conditions.
SALARY: $17.50 per hour (non-union) plus 4% vacation pay
