Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for several casual positions of Skate Sharpener for winter skating programs at the Emera Oval. Skate Sharpener positions will work as part of a team of skating ambassadors of HRM’s Emera Oval facility. Skate Sharpeners will monitor use of all skates and ensure all equipment is safe and in good working condition. Skate Sharpeners will be required to ensure that the Emera Oval provides a safe, fun and festive atmosphere for skating activities and events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Monitors and ensures all hockey/figure skates are in safe working condition
• Sharpens hockey/figure skates
• Manages equipment and sharpening schedule in a logistical manner

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Previous experience sharpening skates an asset
• Trained to sharpen skates specifically on our equipment or willing to do so

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively with other staff
• Takes an enthusiastic approach

Physical Requirements:

• Stamina to stand for 3-4 hours
• Ability to lift and move up to 20lbs
• Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching above shoulders and sitting

Conditions of Employment:

• Applicants must have current certification in Standard First Aid CPR Level B or willing to obtain by December 4, 2023
• Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
• Applicants must attend an orientation/training date (Dates in November/December)

Security Clearance Requirements: Selected applicants must complete an employment screening check, including a Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search to be completed by December 4, 2023.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Casual, part-time hourly

HOURS OF WORK: Seasonal; December to March. Number of weeks and hours per week will depend on the Oval operational schedule and participant levels. The Oval may be closed, or staff hours reduced due to weather or poor conditions, construction delays, site damage, and/or low participation levels. Skate Sharpeners will not be paid if attendance at work is not required due to the above noted conditions.

SALARY: $18.50 per hour (non-union) plus 4% vacation pay
