Role Summary:

The Director, Global Accounting is a critical role in the Corporate Finance team responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting function and leading the monthly and quarterly financial close process across Global Sun Life. As part of the close process, the incumbent will lead the preparation/review of GL-driven schedules/notes in support of external financial reporting, as well as the production of select legal entity financial statements to support different reporting objectives. As the recognized general ledger subject matter expert, the Director, Global Accounting will also participate in ad-hoc transactions/projects, including various M&A activities, tax restructuring, capital events, etc. across the organization to provide operational accounting guidance in support of these events. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, results-driven individual with a strong accounting background, a proven ability to lead in complexity, and an immaculate attention to detail.

Main Accountabilities:

Lead the monthly accounting consolidation and close process for Global Sun Life, including dual reporting in 2022 under IFRS 4/17 in 2 separate general ledger systems (Oracle & SAP)

Lead the operational accounting function and reported results for the Corporate BG, partnering with functional teams across Corporate Finance

Drive the quarterly close process, including the production of general ledger driven deliverables in support of external financial reporting

Serve as the business owner for the Oracle / SAP general ledgers for Global Sun Life, guiding system usage, controls, policy-setting and best practices

Advise on the operational accounting for complex business transactions in support of BG partners and functional teams, including M&A, Tax restructuring, Capital issuances, Resegmentation, etc.

Lead the preparation and presentation of analytical documents for senior leaders (SVP, CFO) to support their understanding of reported results

Direct the design and execution of accounting-related key controls to support the Global ICFR program, including the performance of critical 2LOD responsibilities

Drive process improvement initiatives across Corporate Finance to build efficiencies and reduce risk

Identify and resolve outstanding issues and execute on refinements from the SAP implementation

Competencies:

Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA)

10+ years of relevant work experience in large matrix organizations, with strong IFRS knowledge

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to accuracy and detail, while maintaining perspectives on the “big picture” in a complex environment

Proven ability to lead a large team, with a focus on staff development and coaching junior team members

Ability to understand, resolve and communicate complex accounting issues to a wide audience across BG/Corporate teams

Ability to manage changing priorities with excellent organizational skills in a fast-paced environment

Ability to influence without authority and build effectively partnerships with BG finance teams and Corporate functions

Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

Experience in using Oracle and/or SAP is an asset

Experience in using Longview is an asset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
