Job description: ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Are you passionate about bikes? Do you want to support access to active, sustainable and affordable transportation on campus? Does the idea of teaching patrons and supporting volunteers interest you? If yes, then being Sustain SU’s Bike Mechanic would be an excellent opportunity for you!

The Bike Mechanic is the maestro of tuning and maintaining the Sustain SU Bike Library & Workshop (North Campus, SAB 1-13). This position is primarily responsible for the maintenance and operations of the Bike Library & Workshop space. This position is also responsible for co-management of a team of volunteers, and administrative and business support for the operations of the program.

This position is open immediately and has a planned end date of April 30, 2025, with possibility of extension. A consistent weekly schedule is necessary, although some flexibility is available in determining that schedule. This position works part time at 15 hours per week during the Fall and Winter semesters; the position works part time at 20 hours per week during the Spring and Summer semesters.

ABOUT THE STUDENTS’ UNION

The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) is the official student-run organization for undergraduates at the University of Alberta. We aim to improve the student experience, through the services, events and spaces that we provide. We also provide advocacy on behalf of students within the university community, and to all levels of government.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Manage the Bike Library & Workshop, including care of the bicycles and equipment, support for administration of the rental process, and safety checks on returned bicycles.

  • Host in-person and virtual workshops on bicycle safety, maintenance and other topics for campus community members.
  • Facilitate drop-in workshop hours, including assisting clients with repairs and maintenance and instructing workshop volunteers.
  • Assist in development and delivery of programming and communications strategies for the Bike Library & Workshop, in collaboration with the Coordinator, Sustain SU.
  • Assist in the training of volunteers for bike maintenance and office support, in collaboration with the Coordinator, Sustain SU.
  • Assist in development of online content related to basic bike maintenance, safety checks and others.
  • Identify program development opportunities, potential collaborators and assist in promotions for the service across campus.
  • Submit of regular monthly, quarterly, and final reports and statistics, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Lead, Sustain SU.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Preference will be given to undergraduate students at the University of Alberta, although this position is open to graduate students and community members;

  • General academic and non-academic understanding of the University of Alberta;
  • Eligible to work in Canada (including students who are in Canada on a study permit);
  • The ability to work on-site at the Bike Library and Workshop and our offices at the University of Alberta’s North Campus, in Edmonton, Alberta;
  • Availability to work varying hours, including possible evenings and weekends during the academic calendar year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with bicycle mechanics and maintenance.

  • Interest in public education, sustainability, and bicycle culture.
  • General administrative skills (asset: experience in using Google Suite of applications).
  • Availability for special events required on occasion.
  • Ability to deal effectively with Students’ Union and University staff, students, and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Able to ride a bike.
  • Asset: experience in educational programming.
  • Asset: volunteer management experience.
  • Asset: customer service experience.
