Director, Finance Operations – Western Canada
You will be responsible for all operational finance functions in West Fraser’s business in Western Canada, with total annual sales between $3 to 4 billion, including operations accounting & control and financial planning & analysis. This position will be a senior financial leader in West Fraser reporting to the VP, Western Canada Operations and leading a direct team of five (5) segment Controllers and an indirect team of approximately 60 Finance / Accounting employees.
You will be a strategic and operational partner to the business unit President / Vice-Presidents, the Director of Finance, Solid Wood as well as work closely with other senior financial leadership on overall strategy. You will contribute to and support the business and success in Western Canada by providing insightful analytics, constructively challenging assumptions, and driving financial and operational accountability throughout.
Key areas of responsibility for the role include:
- Build, develop, and lead a top team through the acquisition, development, engagement, and retention of top talent.
- Serve as a “Trusted Financial and Business Partner” to the VP, Western Canada Operations by providing input and insight into all financial matters related to the business.
- Drive business performance through the following activities:
- Lead regular business reviews.
- Monitor KPIs and engage in driving improvement actions in a daily/weekly rhythm.
- Help business to achieve P&L, cashflow, and operational goals.
- Identify risks and opportunities and develop plans to address these.
- Continuous identification of opportunities to improve/grow the business.
- Collaborate and partner across finance for the best outcomes for the enterprise.
- Continuously improve and enhance business performance through data driven analysis.
- Lead development of the annual financial plan and forecasts for Western Canada and assist in the overall strategic planning process.
- Oversee preparation of presentations related to financial results as well as internal Senior Management (Annual Operating Plan, forecasts, weekly forecasts, etc.) and Operations leadership. Present to these audiences as appropriate. Ensure the accuracy of all information and confirm that outputs meet our very high standards.
- Partner with peer leaders from other segments and geographies to ensure alignment with West Fraser Finance practices and strategy.
- Identify issues and opportunities to improve financial processes and implement recommended solutions.
- Drive accountability and predictability into Western Canada’s financial performance and decision making.
- Visibly support and enhance West Fraser’s high standards of ethics and compliance.
- Viewed as a leader beyond the region, and act as a role model across finance, and the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in business, finance, accounting, along with a CPA designation is required.
The successful candidate will possess a minimum of 10-15 years of progressive financial leadership experience. You will be a broadly qualified and highly talented financial leader with extensive finance/operations experience in a multi-faceted, complex global business in the industrial sector.
You will contribute to and support the business’s growth by serving as a strategic finance business partner, providing insightful analytics, constructively challenging assumptions, and driving financial accountability throughout. You will work well in a collaborative and dynamic global environment, be hard-working and driven, with a focus on results, accountability, and leading improvement. You will be a leader in the identification, development, and promotion of top talent within the West Fraser Finance team.
You lead with confidence, apply a strategic and analytical lens to the finance function and have a collaborative and transparent working style. You will also be self-directed and able to lead critical initiatives as required to realize the business strategy.
Additional qualifications for success in the role include:
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify issues and extract meaningful insights, used to better understand, and overall improve business performance.
- Fluent in all financial domains including FP&A, accounting, internal controls, audit, treasury, and risk management. Must possess a strong understanding of the numbers to develop and maintain trust with senior management, other members within the finance team and other operational functions, and across all key business areas.
- Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to influence business leadership; proven track record driving sustainable, profitable growth and developing objective business cases.
- Both operational mindset and strategic mindset.
- Demonstrated people development and leadership skills with a track record of mentoring, coaching, and teaching to build top talent within the organization. Ability to provide constructive and positive feedback, while motivating and holding the team accountable for team performance.
- Ability to use external perspective when analyzing and summarizing performance and results.
- High attention to detail and quality of work; data driven and transparent.
- Understand the impact of business decisions on the different business units, as well as having an appreciation of site, country, and cultural differences.

- Superb presentation skills. Previous experience preparing materials and presenting to the CEO and CFO levels desirable.
- Credibility and leadership. Capable of generating a high degree of respect and trust rapidly across all functions and levels of the organization.
