Job description: Our client, a large well known NPO located in Guelph has an immediate opening for a Director of Finance & Administration to work on an immediate contract. The contract term would be a minimum of 3 months with potential to be extended and potentially lead to a permanent position.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Finance & Administration is a key member of the management team and provides financial support and advice to the management team, board of directors and associated board committees in strategic financial planning matters and to ensuring the organization of a continuously sound financial structure. The Director of Finance is responsible for all financial systems, internal controls and financial reporting for the organization including the control of the flow of cash through the organization and maintaining the integrity of funds and valuable documents.

Key Position Responsibilities and Duties

Financial Management and Advisory

  • Ensure the appropriate accounting and control systems are developed, communicated and enforced in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for non- profit organizations and in compliance with the contractual and legal obligations
  • Oversee and manage all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, benefits and pension and associated financial reporting to ensure accurate, reliable and timely financial performance and reporting that are in compliance with industry best practices and consistent with current accounting standards
  • Provide ongoing financial analysis, projections and assessments and make recommendation to ensure efficiency, cost containment, and continuous improvement advising the General Manager on any financial issues relevant to the organization
  • Prepares and presents relevant financial information to the general manager, board and relevant committees including annual and 5 year budgets, operations plan, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.
  • Monitors all spending to ensure that expenditures are properly documented and authorized
  • Prepares costing analyses in support of funding proposals, facilitating financial reporting and claims for funded projects
  • Coordinates annual audit and funder audits, as well as government audits where required consulting with the external auditors to ensure that all significant accounting issues are being handled in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Ensures that the appropriate liability, property and travel insurance coverage is in place
  • Arrange and maintain all banking relationships and processes including management of company corporate credit cards and adherence to credit card policy.
  • Ensure that all government remittances, filings and other corporate financial obligations are completed on time and accurately.

Contracts Management

  • Maintains files for all contractual commitments
  • Oversees the negotiation and fulfillment of service contracts with suppliers including: landlords, insurance agents, auditors, bankers, investment brokers and consultants.
  • Assists the Management Team in ensuring compliance with the financial contractual requirements of all program operating agreements

Administration

  • Provide leadership, support, training and evaluation to payroll and administrative support staff
  • Provide support to the Board of Directors, Budget, Audit and Pension Governance Committees

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in finance
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA), or exceptional knowledge of finance gained through equivalent experience
  • Some experience in a Not For Profit organization would be a significant advantage
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Strong analytical capacity and ability to communicate complex financial issues to non- financial team members
