The University of Calgary has one of Canada’s largest and most successful continuing education programs. Continuing Education is an academic unit whose mission is to provide high-quality educational opportunities to lifelong learners, thereby strengthening our community and our university. Continuing Education administers more than 20,000 course enrolments per year, generating over $12 million in tuition revenues in the process.
The English Language Program provides second language learning solutions at the local and international level for individual, institutional, and business clients. High quality, customer-centred, comprehensive language programs for international adult learners are the core business of the program.

The English Language Program is looking for qualified ESL instructors for teaching and/or subbing in the fall academic semester program.

These instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).

ESL 100 Academic Semester Courses (main campus)
September 19-December 16, 2022

  • Grammar: M/W/F: 9am-1020am & T/Th: 9am-1040am
  • Reading/Writing: M/W/F: 1030-12pm & T/Th: 11am-1230pm
  • Speaking/Listening: M/W: 1-3pm & T/Th: 2-4pm

Program Description:

Grammar: Students will use a communicative approach to be able to identify and use target grammar in writing and speaking.

Reading/Writing: Students will use a communicative approach to be able to use reading strategies and critical thinking skills to read a variety of texts as well as improve writing skills.

Speaking/Listening: Students will use a communicative approach to improve their listening and speaking skills to communicate accurately and fluently in different English-speaking situations.

Scope of Responsibilities: * In-class delivery through communicative teaching methodology

  • High reliance on cooperative learning activities
  • Create effective lessons plans, develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, assessments

Qualifications: * A university degree and a minimum TSL Canada Level 1 Certificate

  • A TSL Canada Level 2 or 3 Certificate is desirable.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching adult English Learners is essential; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred. International teaching experience is desirable.
  • Culturally competent and sensitive to the needs of second language learners and international students.
  • Proficient in the use of email, MS Word, and MS Excel. Experience using a Learning Management System is desirable.

Compensation:

English Language Program instructors are remunerated at $44-$47/hr (hourly rate includes prep and planning).
