About the role:
To be a technical specialist who supports the Financial Reporting Leadership Team with strategic initiatives aimed at continuous enhancement of the financial soundness of Meridian Credit Union and its subsidiaries, through management of internal controls, reporting systems and processes, and assessment of the impact of new and evolving reporting requirements. To provide additional capacity during the year-end cycle by assisting Senior Analysts and the Leadership Team with non-routine complex accounting tasks, including preparation of Audited Financial Statement Note Disclosures.
What you will do:
Backfill for Financial Reporting Leadership Team:
Backfill Financial Reporting Leadership positions for Team Members who are temporarily seconded to projects, given their subject matter expertise. This may include all or a subset of the responsibilities of the Senior Manager Financial Reporting, Senior Manager Financial Accounting and Accounts Payable, Director Accounting Policy and Taxation, or any of their direct reports.
Mergers and Acquisitions:
- Support due diligence on future merger/acquisition opportunities.
- Identify tax planning opportunities.
- Support preparation or review of fair market value & intangibles valuations.
- Determine Financial Reporting impacts and assist with integration of acquired or merged entities.
- Abide by confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements as required depending on the nature to the project.
Initiatives:
- Represent the broader Financial Reporting team as a key project resource and subject matter expert on cross-functional projects/initiatives as required.
- Determine Financial Reporting impacts and assist with implementation of Financial Reporting tasks relating to initiatives.
- Build relationships with other cross-functional project leads/resources to be viewed as someone who is sought out for opinions and counsel.
Other Duties:
- Maintain general knowledge of all areas of Financial Reporting in order to:
- backfill for the various Leadership roles; or
- represent all areas and identify Financial Reporting implications when working on initiatives.
- Maintain current knowledge of new financial reporting standards.
- Assist with preparation of analysis and financial statement note disclosures to support the annual audited financial statement process.
- Research and prepare accounting memos and/or position papers to support accounting treatment of new or unusual transactions.
- Perform other duties as required.
What you will bring:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a focus on commerce, finance, accounting, statistics, mathematics or computer science.
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation required.
- CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) is an asset
- Strong Excel, Power Point, and Word skills
Experience
- Experience in a financial reporting environment, preferably within a financial institution is required (banking, insurance).
- Minimum of 5 years of industry/professional experience in a complex, multi-platform; budgeting, financial analysis, and financial systems;
- Minimum of 5 years experience managing, prioritizing, and delivering solution on time, to scope, and within budget
- In-depth technical and practical knowledge of IFRS.
- Corporate income tax experience an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Solid understanding of treasury management concepts and strategies, as they relate to financial reporting implications.
- Strong spreadsheet proficiency and familiarity with data query/analysis tools.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong analytical skills and extensive experience completing complex reconciliations.
- Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to implement solutions at an operational level.
- Ability to quickly learn new tasks or apply previous knowledge to be able to step into various roles as needed.
- Ability to work on projects with cross functional involvement and the ability to provide direction/guidance and to influence and effect change.
- Strong research skills and the ability to apply knowledge to specific situations in support of an accounting position or recommendation.
- Able to prioritize deliverables and adapt to changing business needs and changing environment with innovative solutions
- Ability to take a vague request or unfamiliar situation and formulate a clear direction to achieve desired results.
- Ability to work independently and manage daily workplan given the ad hoc and somewhat unstructured nature of this role.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent presentation skills, ability to write clearly and concisely, and to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance individuals;
- Commitment to the organization by actively supporting the values and demonstrating alignment with the goals of the organization.
