The Health & Counselling Centre (HCC) at UTM is a multi-disciplinary health clinic that provides student-friendly medical care, mental health counselling, and health education and promotion programs and services to a diverse student population of undergraduate and graduate students. The HCC strives to empower students to make healthier, evidence-based choices to support their growth and development, assists students in their pursuit of academic success, and promotes adoption of positive coping skills to foster greater resiliency in the pursuit of current and future goals. The HCC works closely with other departments across the University with the goal of ensuring students have timely access to quality medical and mental health support.

Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, the Health Education Coordinator oversees the delivery of the HCC’s promotion and outreach activities related to healthy active living. This education and outreach program is designed to assist UTM students and campus community members to have greater awareness of the information, tools, and resources that support people in making healthy choices to be better equipped to meet their personal and academic goals. The Health Education Coordinator will oversee and coordinate the work of student-staff and volunteers in the Wellness Ambassadors program. The incumbent will deliver training and workshops related to physical and mental health, coordinate the planning and execution of the HCC’s annual Be Well UTM: Resource and Activity Fair, and will take the lead on the development and oversight, planning and delivery of other ongoing activities and monthly events. The Health Education Coordinator will have a key role in the design and delivery of social media and website materials for the department, working with other communications professionals, as well as overseeing student staff to support social media and blog posting. The incumbent will have strong communication and relationship-building skills, and will play a lead role in developing and maintaining campus and community partnerships and collaborations. The Health Education Coordinator works closely with management on the evaluation of health education and clinical service offerings for the HCC.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities
  • Conducting detailed analysis of program efficiency and student learning outcomes to inform program planning activities
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Interpreting andapplying policies and procedures when making independent decisions
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Developing strategies that maximize outreach to students
  • Editing content for brochures, newsletters, websites and/or handbooks
  • Training and coaching student life staff and student leaders

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Master’s degree in Public Health preferred.
  • Minimum four years working within a health promotion-related field, or within the field of event planning.
  • Prior experience planning, developing, and promoting events required
  • Prior experience delivering educational workshops and/or trainings
  • Prior professional experience maintaining social medial platforms required
  • Prior experience with supervision
  • Prior experience working with the emerging adult population (i.e., 17-24 year olds)
  • Prior experience evaluating program effectiveness
  • Strong skills related to Microsoft Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Publisher, MS Forms etc)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially within the dynamics of team- based work
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Prior experience with researching community mental health supports and working with substance abuse content preferred
  • Prior experience developing evidence-based materials (updating website, creating brochures/pamphlets etc)
  • Experience maximizing the use of social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Tik tok, Twitter, Facebook etc) to engage a specific target audience
