ABOUT THE ROLE
As we continue to evolve our Information Technology team, we are looking to hire an innovative and results-orientated IT Solutions Manager, Infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Manager, Infrastructure Operations, you will design, deploy, and manage TransAlta’s hybrid infrastructure landscape across multiple data centers, field deployments, and Azure cloud.
As a solutions architect you are responsible for strategy development, identification and selection of appropriate cloud/on-prem/edge services based on requirements and constraints, has deep subject matter expertise, and can evaluate new technologies for fit in current infrastructure architecture. You will work closely with the operational team to handle service escalation, identify and develop efficiencies, and ensure business outcomes are achieved through execution of strategic capital work.
This is a full-time salaried position.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILTIES
As the IT Solutions Manager, Infrastructure, you will:
- Responsible for the development of TransAlta’s host and compute strategic roadmap including the prioritization and oversight of the supporting capital plan with scope across cloud, data center, and edge compute and storage
- Provide architectural consulting expertise, direction, and assistance to the Enterprise Architect and all IT groups
- Ensure documentation for all infrastructure systems is accurate and maintained
- Provide support to the infrastructure operations team to ensure escalations are handled, support services SLAs are met, and KPIs are identified and reported on
- Design, develop, and oversee implementation of all enterprise infrastructure systems working with network and security leads to deliver optimized and secure solutions across the landscape
- Responsible for delivering security and asset management aspects of infrastructure including patching, back-up and recovery, and life cycle management
- Manage our environments to be compliant with industry standard regulations for security and reliability
- Provide oversight on log aggregation and application performance monitoring surrounding our production environments
- Develop, document, communicate, and enforce a cloud technology standards policy
- Conduct research on emerging infrastructure technologies and develop business cases to recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and flexibility, while achieving documented KPI’s and delivering business outcomes
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience to be successful in this role:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, system analysis, or a related field, or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum 10 years of system administration (Windows, Linux, VMware, Nutanix, Hyper-V) with increasing level of responsibility across physical and cloud-based systems
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated strategic planning work including the development of multi and hybrid cloud platforms designed to deliver on business outcomes
- Experience with multi-tier architectures: load balancers, caching, web servers, application servers, databases, hyper-converged technologies, and networking
- Demonstrated experience in cloud migration processes and technologies
- Working knowledge of cloud security products including monitoring and SIEM technologies such as Azure Sentinel, Windows Defender, and Splunk
- Demonstrated experience leading cost savings initiatives across cloud environments
- Advanced working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code: design and security, configuration management, integration, deployment, performance monitoring and tuning, automation of infrastructure
- Working knowledge of back-up and recovery best practices and technologies
- Experience writing business cases that articulate technical solutions as desired business outcomes and consider corporate risk tolerance as part of the recommendation
- Strong understanding of data storage management and movement
- Highly self-motivated and directed, valuing a culture of autonomy and empowerment

The following qualifications and/or experience are desirable, but not essential:
- Certifications with Microsoft, Azure, AWS, GCP, VMware, and/or Nutanix preferred
