The Englishe Language Program within University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager, International Partnerships.
University of Calgary Continuing Education houses one of Canada’s largest and most successful continuing education departments. In support of the University of Calgary’s core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of lifelong learning opportunities.
Continuing Education consists of a number of distinct programming teams with a central service team, serving almost 20,000 students annually. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the University. The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon providing highly effective student services and quality programs.
The English Language Program (ELP) provides second language learning solutions at the local and international level for individual, institutional, and business clients. High quality, customer-centered, comprehensive language programs for international adult learners are the core business of the ELP. The Manager, International Partnerships leads the ELP Group Programs team to develop and grow international programs serving international partner institutions, funding agencies, and educational agencies. This position reports to the Associate Director, International and works closely with Managers, Coordinators, Instructors and other staff in a cross-functional team environment that supports over 1000 English learners annually. This position also provides client engagement and support for Continuing Education International Professional Programs (IPP) and Calgary International Summer Program (CISP).
The Manager, International Partnerships will lead a team of Coordinators and ESL Student Supports that support the growth of revenue generating educational programs for Continuing Education international students. The successful candidate will ensure that direct reports have all the required knowledge and support to be successful in their roles, and that quality customer service and program coordination is provided to international partner institutions, educational agents, and funding agencies.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Develops new and existing client relationships with foreign and local partners that are mutually beneficial and revenue generating.
- Manages a team of 4 Coordinators/ESL Student Supports (AUPE) including recruitment, orientation, supervision of work, training, mentoring, performance evaluation, time reporting, performance management (using the resources and tools available through HR), discipline, and termination (if required).
- Ensures optimal individual and team functioning.
- Supports and guides staff on a day-to-day basis, providing coaching and mentoring when required.
- Establish relationship management a relationship strategy for students, educational agents, funding agencies, and foreign institutions and implement vehicles for on-going communication.
- Ensure that Conted international programs meet client needs in terms of student support, learning objectives, academic requirements and credentialing.
- Lead the implementation of new client services, train staff on the supporting processes and manage the outcomes.
- Plan and implement marketing and recruiting missions.
- Establish and implement processes to recruit, vet, and support international agents.
- Keep current with new developments in language travel study, international education, international markets, providers and competition.
- Respond to RFPs for customized courses from partner institutions and funding organizations.
- Keep current with new developments affecting international students (Visa status and regulations) and immigrant population.
- Prepare program evaluations, statistical reports, and student documents for partner organizations that meet their content requirements and deadlines.
- Develop and update cohort-specific responses to guide ELP Operations Team in dealing with student concerns.
- Oversee the maintenance of accurate client invoicing records.
- Prepare budgets and financial reports as needed.
- Provide input to Associate Director, International on development of department business plans, program budgets and administrative capacity.
- Ensure Continuing Education international programs meet and deliver on contractual arrangements as outlined in agreements with partnering organizations.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- University degree in a relevant field (education, commerce, economics, management).
- Oral and written fluency in Japanese and proven success in working with Japanese organizations and post-secondary institutions.
- Minimum 10 years experience in the language-travel sector, including experience working with third-party educational agents.
- Minimum 5 years experience in planning and implementing domestic and international recruitment activities including domestic and international recruitment trips.
- Experience in partnership agreements with external institutions is required.
- Proven success in developing and marketing revenue generating, education programs in higher education.
- Knowledge and understanding of the educational and training needs of international students, immigrants and corporate professionals.
- A proven track record of exceptional client relationships and customer service is required.
- Experience working with international post-secondary institutions, educational agents, and governmental sponsorship and funding bodies is required.
- Strong and proven leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, guide and sustain a team through change.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret strategic direction with the capability to operationalize plans, implement processes and document procedures for standardization.
- Proven ability to make sound judgements, act decisively and provide clear direction on a wide range of issues.
- Ability to perform multiple and complex tasks with attention to detail as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills is required.
- Advanced understanding of the Destiny One course registration system and a strong understanding of the University’s core business systems, PeopleSoft, e-Procurement, and Desire 2 Learn are required.
- Ability to assess organizational requirements for employee development and advancement would be an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of accounting standards and financial reporting.
