Job description: The mission of the Waste Education and Outreach (WEO) team is to inform, engage, and empower Edmontonians to fully participate in the City’s waste management system. The Program Lead, Waste System Education will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of public and internal education programs that support Edmonton’s waste strategies.

We’re looking for a seasoned public education leader, ready to lead the Waste System education team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective waste and education programs. You’ll be able to apply your expert knowledge in environmental education, adult education, and K-12 education to oversee the project and program management of diverse educational offerings. You’ll also act as a subject matter expert in education and environmental education best practices, applying your technical knowledge to advise the whole WEO team on creating effective and engaging educational programs.

The Waste Education and Outreach team relies on data for program evaluate our programs’ effectiveness and for continuous improvement. Your success will also be measured by the positive relationships and culture you build with the Waste System Education team, the WEO team, your Waste Services colleagues, and internal/external stakeholders.

In alignment with the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments of being safe, helpful, accountable, integrated and excellent, you will:

  • Lead and guide the work of three education specialists (with additional waste educators rounding out the team)
  • Lead and project manage the development, implementation, and evaluation of all of Waste Services’ education programs
  • Use qualitative and quantitative evaluation and conduct needs assessments for future training/educational programs to determine if tools/programs need to be altered or added
  • Acts as an internal technical resource for the Branch on the development, implementation, and evaluation of public environmental education programs and outreach efforts
  • Ensures Branch marketing, communications, and outreach materials reflect educational best practices (ie. how readers make meaning from text, graphics, and pictures, the importance of layout, plain language and active voice when communicating with the public, etc.)
  • Fosters strong relationships with internal and community partners to enhance Waste’s educational programs

Qualifications

  • A university degree in Education, Adult Education, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience in educational/training program
  • Knowledge of best practice approaches to environmental education leading to behaviour change
  • Knowledge of public education program coordination and management, including planning, implementation, evaluation, procurement, and budgeting
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of leadership, motivation, team building, and conflict resolution
  • Extensive knowledge of program/project management and the ability to apply project management tools and techniques
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in a respectful and inclusive way
  • Ability to write requests for proposals and negotiate and manage contracts
  • Ability to set goals, monitor progress, and adjust resources to accomplish objectives
  • Ability to independently solve problems and make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures, and escalate when necessary
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a focus on balancing competing requirements within the various units and ensuring service is delivered accordingly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate to others about the technical aspects of effective communication
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Forms, Drive) and the ability to learn and adapt to evolving technology
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $40.517 – $50.871 (Hourly); $71,381.21 – $89,621.24 (Annually)
