What You Will Do
We seek a big-picture thinker who is passionate about sustainable agriculture in Canada and will thrive in a role that combines conducting research with other activities, including providing scientific advice, communications, and leadership to DUC and partners. The Research Scientist in Sustainable Agriculture will lead a research program that advances sustainable agriculture in areas such as nutrient stewardship, soil health, integrated pest management, repurposing marginal areas, use of big data to develop or implement conservation practices, and/or nature-based solutions. They will be responsible for leading research from project design and securing funds through to publication and knowledge mobilization. They will also have a positive impact by supporting other DUC departments and industry and academic partners. This position will require initiative, excellent relationship-building and communication skills, and a collaborative attitude. The ideal candidate is an innovator who can distil complex issues and translate research into actionable projects and conservation solutions.
The successful candidate will benefit from an established network of collaborations with government agencies and academic and industry partners and unique opportunities to work with conservation delivery teams, programming, and sites across Canada.

Requirements
- PhD with an area of specialty within the field of sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture is a diverse field and applicants with research/expertise applicable to DUC’s mission will be considered.
- Understanding of commercial livestock and crop production systems in Canada;
- Proven ability to design, conduct and publish research;
- Strong quantitative skills;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work both within a team and independently;
- Leadership experience;
- Adaptability to work on a variety of topics;
- An open mind and ability to understand multiple perspectives;
- Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
