Reporting to the Vice President, Accounting, the Senior Manager, Accounting Policy will take on the lead and strategic role as the Corporation’s technical accounting expert. The Senior Manager, Accounting Policy is the Corporation’s lead financial standards contact responsible for maintaining accurate financial statements, aligning business intent with reported results, and enabling the Corporation’s positive reputation. This individual is a key interface with the Corporation’s Business Unit Executives, Audit Committee, external auditors, business development and other financial services specialists.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Lead the development of the organization’s accounting policy discussions on the technical accounting interpretations, activities related to acquisitions, dispositions, and reorganizations, new and amended commercial agreements, including joint venture arrangements and other financing structures and agreements;
  • Create a monitoring and education system to ensure organizational understanding and compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements;
  • Articulate historical background and future perspective of accounting policies;
  • Compare and contrast major accounting practices in industry and global best practice standards;
  • Stay current with new standards and regulations, to identify reporting issues to the business that result in technical interpretations or policy changes; and
  • Liaise with financial reporting, capital markets, investor relations, tax, and other departments and stakeholders to ensure implications of accounting interpretations are understood and applied.

Qualifications

  • Designated Accountant (CA CPA) with 25+ years of experience in technical accounting and/or related leadership experience;
  • A proven people leader, who has a track record of effective resource planning, performance feedback, employee development and guidance. This includes ensuring goal alignment accountability with respect to corporate strategies and performance measures, while maintaining a succession plan for key positions in the department;
  • An effective leader that builds trust, collaboration, and relationships with leaders across the business and service units;
  • Genuine interest in developing employees to the best of their abilities, cooperatively leading a team to generate superior results and recognizing efforts and accomplishments in a timely manner;
  • Effective communication, organization and team building skills complemented by a strong work ethic; and
  • Passion for positive change and process improvement.
