Job description: What is the opportunity?

The Director, Data Science and Digital Transformation leads the data science and digital transformation work stream of the enterprise recovery and resolution planning (RRP) program by: (1) developing and effectively implementing an annual data science and digital transformation strategy for the RRP program to be reviewed and approved by the Head, RRP and the Global Recovery and Resolution Oversight Committee; (2) creating, implementing and regulatory monitoring an appropriate data strategy to help ensure the future success of the RRP program; and (3) finding meaningful efficiencies by way of streamlining, automating and further refinement of RRP processes.

The Director, Data Science and Digital Transformation manages a small team that is accountable for implementing the data science and digital transformational strategy in addition to producing a variety of elements of the recovery and resolution plans.

What will you do?

Lead the strategic digital transformation of the enterprise RRP program by:

  • Developing, communicating and implementing a strategy to digitally transform RRP processes as appropriate (e.g. plan design, content creation and stakeholder engagement) for review and approval by senior management and the GRROC, and ongoing monitoring to ensure measures of success are met.
  • Effective adoption of digital tools (e.g. python, machine learning, tableau, adobe creative suite, etc.) that significantly enhance the RRP program and find process efficiencies.
  • Rethink current RRP processes to unlock meaningful value in terms of cost, automation and synergies. The role may expand in the future as appropriate to digital transform various regional RRP requirements that RBC is subject to globally in order to unlock further value at the subsidiary level.
  • Accountable for driving strategic outcomes including: (1) develop a vision for where data, data science, digital transformation and RRP plans need to be in 1 to 5 years; and (2) ensures appropriate staffing and funding, and allocate and mobilize those resources appropriately from a strategic perspective. Understand what work should be conducted, what work should be stopped, and when work should be pushed to other groups.
  • Effective coaching of team to effectively partner with stakeholders in the RRP process (regulators, businesses, functions, etc.) and educate other stakeholders on the RRP mandate.
  • Leverage an organizational awareness and network to ensure that the RRP team is able to leverage best practices both within and outside of RBC. Drive required outcomes through anticipating and responding to constructive challenges to the output of the team and stakeholders.
  • Act as the representative on areas related to this mandate for internal and external stakeholders (e.g. OSFI, CDIC, industry working groups) to effectively advance RBC priorities.
  • Lead a small team that creates rich content for the recovery and resolution plans that cost effectively enhances the firm’s crisis readiness and address regulatory requirements. Develop RRP talent for career progression in line with the RBC Leadership Model.

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, Financial Engineering, Economics or a related field with 10-12 years of experience in computer science, software engineering, data science and neural networks, banking businesses, risk management, finance, financial engineering, corporate treasury or other related fields.
  • Seasoned expertise in data science, digital transformation, risk management, and regulatory liaison ideally in RRP. Experience in managing large specialized teams and large complex projects
  • Thorough knowledge of AI (e.g. Python), Tableau and creative/content-based tools (e.g. Adobe)
  • Organized self-starter with strong conceptual, analytical, and problem solving skills, positive & collaborative mindset to take initiative and drive results
  • Excellent writing, communication, stakeholder management and presentation skills

Nice to Have:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Finance, Financial Engineering)
  • CA, CFA, FRM or other professional designations
