Recruitment range: $51,466 – $57,922 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
Performance range: starting salary to max of $67,542 is available through annual performance increases
Job Summary
The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability (OCPS) oversees all aspects of campus land use planning processes and facilitates the advancement of sustainability interests across the university. The Office guides campus development and operations in accordance with the university’s mission, strategic priorities and its research and teaching needs.
Under the direction of the Sustainability Manager, the Communications and Reporting Coordinator serves as the communications lead raising internal and external awareness of the UVic’s climate action contributions and in reporting on the university’s leadership position in sustainability. The Coordinator will also support the preparation and communication of community engagement opportunities for campus planning initiatives such as major capital projects and policy plans. Considerable liaison is required with departments (operational, academics, research, and community/external relations), student groups, personnel from other post-secondary institutions and the broader community.
Duties include conducting and coordinating sustainability, climate action and campus planning communications, developing sustainability reporting systems, implementing sustainability communication and reporting plans, monitoring and evaluating programs and projects, conducting and/or reviewing awards applications with a sustainability lens. The Coordinator provides advice and recommendations on various topics related to the communication and reporting aspects of the Sustainability Action Plan for Campus Operations, Sustainability Tracking Assessment Rating System (STARS), greenhouse gas emissions reporting, the next Climate and Sustainability Action Plan and others. The position also manages student intern projects, prepares communication and report materials, participates in special events, committees and forums.
Job Requirements
University degree in a science or social science discipline, communications, or relevant field of study, along with two or more years of work experience in an area related to sustainability, communications and data management. A solid and in depth knowledge base on sustainability matters related to climate change, energy, water, green buildings, transportation, waste management, natural areas and purchasing is essential. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
In addition this position requires:
- Experience in writing and editing a variety of mediums
- Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating communications plans and materials
- Experience writing technical or compliance reports
- Socially and culturally aware with an ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all levels of university personnel, student body, community and stakeholders
- Exceptional analytical, reporting and research skills
- Strong organizational and project planning skills; attention to detail
- Confident public speaking skills and experience in facilitating meetings
- Demonstrated customer service orientation
- Proven experience in problem solving, exercising sound judgement and effective decision making
- Proven track record achieving project goals on time and producing deliverables of high quality
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Knowledge requirements:
- Understanding and awareness of sustainability, climate action trends and best practices (mitigation, risks and adaptation), and climate change impacts
- Project and data management best practices
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
- Sound knowledge and strategic use of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube), and social media management tool (Hootsuite)
- Web content management systems such as Cascade
