As the Financial Accountant, you will:

  • audit UVic’s payroll processing and controls,
  • administer the remittances of a $350 million annual payroll, and
  • maintain the accounts associated with a large and complex payroll system.

The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $61,935 – $69,710 starting salary determined by the PEA .

Performance range: starting salary to max of $81,286 is available through annual performance increases

Job Summary

The Financial Services department is responsible for managing the university’s accounting policies, procedures and financial reporting. The department is divided into four separate units Research Accounting, treasury, purchasing and payroll. Financial Services is responsible for the administration and financial reporting and payment of all transactions for all university funds.

Reporting to the Executive Director and as part of a team, this position’s primary responsibility is the production of widely varied and often unprecedented monthly, quarterly and year-end financial reports, cash flows and varied working papers for all funds and balance sheet account reconciliation. Each function has unique terms, conditions and reporting requirements which must be accurately analyzed, interpreted and reported on. This position requires a high level of skill, knowledge and decision making ability due to the high volume and immediate nature of the transaction and client interaction.

Duties include the following:

  • Prepare financial reconciliations and financial reports with complex reporting and auditing requirements
  • Review, interpret and analyze HR contracts for compliance and risk mitigation
  • Analyze financial data and make recommendations to support management decision-making
  • Review, analyze, reconcile, investigate and correct errors in complex financial systems including review and preparation of journal vouchers salary transfers, banking transactions and budget entries
  • Provide guidance and direction to staff to ensure reporting requirements are met
  • Monitor and provide ongoing client support across the university and other institutions
  • Participate in special projects
  • Perform other duties of similar scope

This position applies Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and other Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as applicable in performing daily tasks.

Job Requirements

This position requires a professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA) plus three years professional experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment.

Experience must include:

  • Knowledge and understanding of university and other research funding environments
  • Experience with granting agency policies and reporting requirements
  • An understanding of audit requirements
  • Financial reporting and complex analysis

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

In addition this position requires:

  • Ability to deal with complex contracts, CRA submissions and collective agreement interpretation as it relates to salary payments
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set and work to priorities and schedules
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate via multiple methods, critical financial information to a varied audience that may not have financial expertise
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and maintain attention to detail while working within a large, complex environment
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet established deadlines and to accommodate changing deadlines
  • Ability to effectively problem-solve with incomplete information
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work requirements
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and with all levels of university personnel
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Proven track record achieving project goals on time and producing deliverables of a high quality
  • Project management skills
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with advanced Excel skills
