Job description: DUTIES:
Reporting to the Manager, International Education the International Student Support Advisor (ISSA) is responsible for supporting the specific needs of international students at Durham College as they transition and adapt to a new living and learning environment in Canada. The ISSA will provide information and support to students as required for during their time as students, with a focus on graduation supports. The ISSA will also support international students with their arrival in Canada, healthcare access and insurance, housing, and adapting to the expectations of Durham College. This role will support the transitions and persistence of international students through one-on-one advising, programming, and intra-departmental collaboration.
Student Advising – The ISSA will provide one-on-one advising to international students who require support as they transition to living and learning in the Canadian environment. This may include but is not limited to:
- providing guidance on academic choices including program choice, registration, academic success, and academic planning for international students
- contact for registered international students to assess needs and refer to appropriate college and community supports
- strong understanding of college policies and processes, and supporting international students as they navigate their college career
- working collaboratively with college departments and Schools to support international students in making choices that support their success
- providing information to international students on their opportunities to work in Canada
Immigration Information – The ISSA is responsible for providing accurate information to international students on immigration policies that relate to their studies and legal status in Canada. This may include but is not limited to:
- proactively researching and understanding changes to the immigration system as it relates to international students and informing the management team and colleagues as appropriate
- working with the international student support and engagement team to develop workshops, resources, and clear messaging to support international students with their immigration responsibilities and opportunities while studying at Durham College
Programming – The ISSA will work with the international student support and engagement team to develop and execute activities and programs that support the needs and development of students at Durham College. This may include but is not limited to:
- Tailored graduation support and design of the Graduating International Student Experience to support students to succeed in their next steps following graduation
- planning, coordinating, and delivering International Student Orientation(s) for each academic intake
- planning, coordinating and delivering regular information sessions for international students
- developing and distributing marketing and communications for planned departmental activities including posters, emails, social media posts, website, app, and intra-college networks
- supporting the international student support and engagement team in planning, coordinating, and delivering an intercultural social activity program for students
- supporting the annual International Education Week activities
Department Support– The ISSA will provide administrative support to the department that is specific to international students. This may include but is not limited to:
- developing and producing reports on international student enrolment, midterm and final grades, and eligible to register reports for and throughout each term
- developing opportunities in collaboration with Schools and departments, systems and resources that contribute to supporting the persistence of international students in the college
- monitoring and evaluating support services for international students and how they integrate with other areas (admissions, finance, enrolment) for relevance, timeliness, and effectiveness
- other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: * Minimum three-year diploma/degree in Humanities, Sociology, Education, International Business, Counseling, Public Administration
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in post-secondary education and working with an internationally engaged clientele
- A working knowledge of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) International Student Program and a commitment to gaining in-depth knowledge in immigration matters as they relate to international students is required.
- Experience successfully developing and delivering engaging workshops
- Posses a strong ability to identify and solve complex problems
- Consistent ability to successfully meet targets while working under pressure
- Demonstrated intercultural competence
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in another language is an asset.
