The Community & Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army. This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided by the Community and Family Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Services and Programs

  • Meet with food bank clients to conduct initial intake application and screen clients seeking assistance, including food, clothing, household needs, referrals etc.
  • Oversee the activities of the CFS food pantry: organize, and ensure that the pantry is tidy and clean, ensure that adequate stock levels are maintained, sort and process donated and purchased goods.
  • Assist with the organization and implementation of seasonal programs provided by the Community and Family Services, as required (e.g., Christmas Kettles, Christmas Hampers, Overnight Summer Camp Programs).
  • Network and refer The Salvation Army to government, and community social services providers to coordinate resources for the benefit if clients and program when necessary.

Supervision

  • Support, assist, supervise, train and schedule volunteers, demonstrate work methods and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
  • May assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
  • In consultation with the supervisor may organize regular meetings with volunteers.

Finance & Administration

  • Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information
  • Periodically review program assistance guidelines with supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information in Linked to Feed and on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Follow direction on the compliance and adherence to Operating Policies and Procedures (e.g., gift cards, vouchers, etc.)

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the Community & Family Services and Food Bank area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Seek out continual education and resources for all areas of responsibilities, specifically regarding COVID-19 requirements as per the local Health Unit.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position based on 18 hours per week
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required, some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting and standing position for periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 – 29 pounds.
  • Some travel, up to 10%, can be required

Normal hours of work: Work will be scheduled between Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as per operational requirements and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, counselling or equivalent in a related field of study is an asset
  • Ability and willingness to provide or obtain a valid Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification and First Aid/CPR preferred.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons with mental health issues
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract for review and verification that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background check search.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
