Job description: Position Overview
The Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre and Integrated Concussion Research Program in the Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The main responsibility of this position is to coordinate multiple aspects of the SHRed Concussions and other related studies, manage the security and integrity of a large volume of data, optimizing study design, data management, and performing data analyses for various initiatives within the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre and Integrated Concussion Research Program. SHRED Concussions is a three-year pan-Canadian prospective cohort study seeking to understand, prevent, and manage sport related concussions in youth.
The incumbent will report to the Principal Investigator and the SIPRC Program Manager, support the Co-Investigator(s), and work collaboratively with research team members (i.e., research coordinators, research assistants, trainees, support staff). The work will involve the management and implementation of research activities (across the project life cycle) and may include coordination, technical support, grant writing, proposal development, ethics submissions, logistical planning, SOP development, recruitment, data collection, data cleaning, data management, data analysis, optimizing study design, and integrated knowledge translation. A high degree of confidentiality is necessary in dealing with research data concerning personal information. The Research Coordinator in SIPRC must demonstrate the ability to determine priorities and deadlines independently.
The key role of the SHRed Concussions research coordinator is to coordinate research activities associated with the design, participant recruitment, data collection, management, analysis, translation, and publication of research data. The research coordinator will act as a liaison between team members and will support the attainment of research milestones and objectives in accordance with established timelines.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Collaborates and provides organizational support to the principal investigator(s) to formulate and develop strategic research plan
- Responsible for detailed management of the design, documentation, and implementation of complex research projects
- Prepares and submits ethics documents through IRISS (Institutional Research Information Services Solution) / CHREB (Conjoint Health Research Board) as well as maintains communication with CHREB
- Develops, implements, and uses data entry systems for research projects
- Build data entry forms using REDCap as per requirement of project leads; incorporates items such as data element definitions, data type definitions, input methods, form text and layout and edit checks/validation rules
- Responsible for supervising all phases of various data management tasks
- Recommends changes to methods, procedures, and practices
- Provide technical support and training sessions to team members and collaborators
- Interact with staff in U of C Clinical Research Unit (CRU) as needed to maintain REDCap access and address performance issues
- Interacts extensively with study PI leading data validation methodology for SHRed Concussions
- Maintain database results by setting and enforcing standards and controls
- Perform quality assurance testing (i.e., cleaning, checking, validation)
- Provide expert guidance on research design, protocol development and implementation, study execution and data safety and monitoring board activities
- Manage, merge and clean research data sets
- Perform advanced statistical analysis and prepare output from statistical analyses for review including reports, graphs, tables, and interpretation
- Advice and train students, co-workers, and researchers in statistics
- Preparation of data for scientific presentations and research manuscripts
- Design data query templates and examples to allow for consistent data draws
- Generation of graphs, tables, and other data visualization outputs from study data in reports and for use in scientific presentations and publications
- Preparation of relevant grant sections pertaining to study design, statistical power, and planned analyses
- Performs data extractions and develops quality processes for data collection and entry
- Evaluates and determines feasibility of study timelines, forecasts resource needs, develops budgets and negotiates intellectual property agreements
- Ensures research timelines, budgets, and protocols are followed
- Ensures a safe working environment for all those involved in the research
- Works with the principal investigators to develop and implement appropriate plans for the dissemination and knowledge translation of research findings, internally and externally
- Works with the principal investigator and investigative team in grant application
- May participate in conducting systematic reviews of the scientific literature. Will lead aspects of detailed reports and executive summaries
- Prepares written summaries which are of high quality, accurate, and audience-appropriate as needed for oral presentations, technical reports, and manuscripts
- Determines personnel requirements to conduct research studies
- Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor, and senior management and with the campus community
- Presents research-related data at scientific meetings and stakeholder education sessions.
- Participate in and support administrative staff members in administrative duties related to budget, HR, and expenses
- Manages own time effectively to accomplish tasks and work assignments in an accurate and timely manner
- Understand, implement and advise on university procedures and standards
- Take responsibility for keeping computer skills and personal development up-to-date
- Maintain research files electronically in an organized manner.
- Make recommendations for changes to policies and procedures as needed to improve service, research, and lab efficiency
- Create and manage complex databases, which may include the management of confidential patient/subject information
- Liaise with RT, HR, Finance, and internal and external stakeholders to the university as needed
- Selection, purchasing, maintenance and management of research equipment
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Post-secondary education, Masters level required, in a relevant related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of sport-related injury and concussion is an asset.
- Proven ability to interact with clinicians and clinical researchers to help establish effective collaborations.
- Minimum of two-year relevant experience as a research coordinator/research assistant in injury prevention, public health, or health sciences research is required
- Understanding of epidemiology is required.
- Incumbent must have strong data management and analytic skills, in addition to demonstrable project management skills to qualify for this role
- Experience using REDCap and/or other EDC systems for research
- Experience with data management services
- Proficient with application of statistical methods
- Expertise with data analysis software (SPSS, SAS, STATA, R)
- Strong organizational skills, problem solving skills
- Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in effective, efficient manner
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and time management skills; meticulous attention to detail; ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment is critical to success in the role
- Highly developed organizational and problem-solving skills are required
- Ability to effectively managing multiple projects/priorities with competing deadlines is required
- Knowledge of the University of Calgary business and research systems is an asset
- Experience and understanding of Human Ethics is an asset.
- Experience working with community sport organizations is an asset.
- Background in sports as a participant, coach, and/or referee is an asset
