Job Description

This role will support the BETTER Life study at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers. The BETTER Life study will build upon the previously established BETTER HEALTH intervention to focus on a new population of adults 18-39 years living with low income. In this implementation study, our team will conduct proof-of-concept testing of the BETTER Life intervention among younger adults in Durham Region, Ontario where we have extensive partnerships. Both survey data and qualitative data will be collected to evaluate the BETTER Life intervention.
Summary of Duties, but not limited to:

  • Generates progress and summary reports for the Principal Investigator and study team
  • Liaise with research team and community partners on a regular basis
  • Assists with enhancing relationships among existing stakeholders; help with the development of new partnerships
  • Initiate and maintain contracts with vendors and other services used by the research team
  • Provides direct supervision of assigned research staff identifying deadlines for various aspects of projects, prompts relevant team members to stay on task in advance of those deadlines
  • Identifies threats and risk factors to project completion and works with team members including research assistants, coordinators and scientists to develop solutions
  • Manages the administrative responsibilities of a research program, including human resources and finance functions
  • Interprets, implements and ensures compliance with policies, operating plans and processes
  • Monitors the progress of research activities; develops and maintains records of research activities; prepares periodic and ad hoc reports, as required by investigators and funding agencies
  • Contributes to and/or leads publications, presentations, and other outputs
  • In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, forecasts, plans and prepares the program’s operating budget; and ensures effective human resource allocation through recruitment, selection, training, and performance management.
  • Oversees the submission of ethics applications both internally as well as submissions to external organizations and tracks ethics approvals
  • Responsible for oversight of all research databases and records at the unit
  • Establishes operating procedures for various research studies
  • Plans and coordinates the initiation of research study protocols
  • Develops and oversees event planning and conferences for research participants and others, including all budgetary and financial aspects
  • Explores new solutions for funding, awards, and bursaries to expand the mission of the unit and the research portfolio
  • Prepares itemized budgets with appropriate justification for grant applications, ensuring that the research project represents a sustainable endeavor and that team resources are leveraged appropriately
  • Maintains financial records for projects, monitors spending against budget, completes projections, and works to ensure the financial sustainability of the unit’s research program
  • Works with the Finance department to ensure full and timely billing and payments for project expenditures
  • Works with relevant departments to develop and establish research contracts and agreements with various external agencies and institutions
  • Plans and coordinates the personnel of research studies including the recruitment and administration of research support staff
  • Supervises team research coordinators, research assistants, and research volunteers
  • Supports principal investigator’s students and ensures their operational integration within the organization

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Health Administration, Public Health, Health Science, Social Sciences, Health & Research Communications and/or related fields, or equivalent experience
  • Five (5) of progressive experience working in a research environment and/or academic hospital.
  • Previous research manager experience at an academic hospital, considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with the BETTER approach considered an asset
  • Certification or working towards a designation in project management considered an asset
  • Minimum three to five years experience in chronic disease prevention research, an asset
  • Minimum three to five years’ experience in health equity research, an asset
  • Experience with engaging community partners and carrying out community-based research
  • Experience incorporating research studies in the day-to-day activities in primary care and community settings
  • Experience with leading and writing up qualitative analysis, including knowledge of NVivo software
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role, supervising a wide variety of people at different levels preferred
  • Experience prioritizing and working in a dynamic environment with strong management skills
  • Experienced in planning and management processes for research (e.g., experience with the ethics approval process, federal granting agency guidelines, etc.)
  • Experience with preparation of relevant materials, such as manuscripts, grant submissions, study proposals, and research ethics board applications
  • Experience with budget planning/monitoring/managing and financial reporting
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion and tact
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Computer competency including experience with EndNote, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Publisher
  • Demonstrated record of good performance and acceptable attendance will be considered as part of the selection criteria
  • Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital
  • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all
