Your Role
Based out of Southwestern Ontario, the Ruminant Nutritionist will work with other Nutritionists, the Ruminant Species Business Unit Manager and Ruminant Sales Representatives in the development, maintenance, and support of all competitively positioned ruminant feed formulation for Dairy, Goat, Sheep and Beef within our Quebec, Ontario, and Western Canadian operations.
A close and harmonious relation between Nutritionists and Sales Representatives is essential to individual, departmental and organizational success. Leveraging these relationships, along with the skills and knowledge of the various team members on-farm, substantially elevates the value we can bring to our customers.
Utilizing AMTS, CowBytes and BeefBytes Ration Balancing Software you will build feeding programs that meet the health, welfare, and economic requirements within the markets in which we operate, the performance expectations of the customers we serve, as well as the strategic objectives of the Company.
As a member of the Ruminant Nutrition Team, you shall be responsible for ensuring our compliance with all Regulatory requirements, work closely and collaboratively with the Quality Assurance & Quality Control
Teams, the Procurement Team, the Mill Operations and Production Teams, as well as the Marketing Department.
In addition, you shall participate in and facilitate the timely resolution of regulatory questions, quality issues and customer complaints, production issues and/or concerns and procurement questions regarding optimal ingredient utilization You shall continually monitor market conditions and provide innovative product and /or ingredient solutions. Management of product life cycle. You shall also identify, explore, initiate, and manage research projects that provide competitive advantage to the company.
Day to Day
- Program development of all ruminant feed formulations (dairy and beef) for Ontario and Western Canadian operations
- Program/Product Performance and Life-Cycle Management
- Support of the development of marketing materials, staff training materials and features and benefits information as it pertains to the various commercial feeding programs.
- Maintain economic competitiveness of ruminant feed formulations – working closely with purchasing team members to review impact of ingredient availability on formulation (establishment of protocol for usage of Multi Blend tool – maximize financial return to the company of best use of ingredients, minimizing impact on performance thru implementation of swing factors on formulation)
- Oversight of New-Life Mills participation in DHA milk program (Ontario)
- Regular assessment of performance results and impact of formulation on same
- Technical support of the Sales and Marketing staff (both from the office and in the field/on farm) – trouble shooting as well as regularly scheduled travel with reps
- Support and Maintenance of ration balancing software for beef / dairy (identify opportunities to increase direct linkages to Brill feed formulation software)
- Development / delivery of regular skills workshops for sales and marketing staff (presentations, articles, etc.)
- Producer education / development (workshops, marketing bulletins, etc.)
- Participation and Support of QA/QC Programs, Regulatory Compliance Initiatives and Feed Assure Programs.
- Review of information from Lab Data as it impacts nutrient profiles of ingredients for regular updating.
- Interact with and assist staff from feed manufacturing facilities – ingredient availability, re-works, substitutions, ingredient usage / restriction, feed quality, quality assurance / quality control (both from the office and in plant), plant efficiency and thru put
- Continuing education – review applicable scientific journals, trial data, supplier information on new and upcoming products, research, attendance at relevant symposiums / conferences.
- Representation of the company in industry where appropriate (Poultry Industry Council, OABA, ANAC, etc.)
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of Master’s degree in Animal Science and Ruminant/Dairy Nutrition.
- 5 years direct experience in Nutrition and Feed Formulation.
- Knowledge / mastery of the principles and practices of feed formulation and manufacture.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of biological and physical testing and analysis of ingredients.
- Strong research and analytical skills with a desire to learn.
- Bilingual an asset.
