Under the direction of the Manager, Corporate Finance and working with the broader Corporate Finance team, the Senior Accountant, Corporate Finance & External Disclosure is responsible for executing the external disclosure and corporate finance programs.

The Senior Accountant is primarily responsible for the execution of the external disclosure program – ‘holding the pen’ on the quarterly MD&A and the annual AIF documents for ATCO Ltd., Canadian Utilities Limited and CU Inc. Additionally, and assisting in the preparation of quarterly and annual external disclosure supporting documents (CFO information package, fact sheets, social media and press releases). On-going communication with the key finance and accounting departments across the ATCO Group of Companies is required.

Additionally, the Senior Accountant is a member of the broader Corporate Finance team and may be asked to work on other corporate finance projects on an ad hoc basis.

Management’s Discussion and Analysis and Annual Information Form

  • Planning, writing and preparation of the quarterly and annual Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and Annual Information Form (AIF) for the ATCO Group’s public companies.
  • Development, enhancement and upgrading of management and financial reporting IT systems in the Workiva Wdesk Cloud Platform.
  • Develop the overall disclosure requirements for public financial disclosure documents.
  • Review others’ work for quality and provides guidance to more junior team members.
  • Develop communication plans or strategy as it relates to the MD&A and AIF.
  • Apply well-developed accounting knowledge in planning, conducting and coordinating these highly complex MD&A and AIF assignments under tight timelines.
  • Use professional judgment to make independent recommendations on assignments that may fall outside of the routine MD&A and AIF reporting such as the reporting implications of significant financial transactions and be able to draft related disclosures.
  • Identify and analyze possible improvements to the reporting process and implement selected solutions.
  • Oversee effective internal controls over the relevant external reporting documents.
  • Provide the reporting to external and internal auditors, and with financial personnel throughout the ATCO Group.

Financial Analysis, Market Analysis and Communication

  • Prepare the collection and analysis of: relative share price movements, investors’ and analysts’ perceptions and opinions, share ownership, various economic and financial indicators and stock market indices. This information is used in preparation of internal monthly management reports to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Draft financial messages for the annual report, the quarterly investor fact sheet, the creation of speeches and presentations for senior management, and the investors section of the external websites.
  • Prepare questions and answers documents for review and use by senior management and the Senior Manager, Investor Relations regarding the: quarterly financial results, MD&A and material news announcements from the company.

Corporate Finance

  • Conduct ad hoc corporate finance research to support ongoing corporate initiatives.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial analysis, draft memos and prepare presentation(s) for the CFO’s office.
  • Maintain an understanding of the ATCO Group’s strategic and financial objectives and performance targets.
  • Maintain an understanding of current market conditions.
  • Respond to special requests from other groups within the Finance & Treasury Department.

Who You Are:

  • Minimum 5+ years experience working in an accounting or finance environment
  • Bachelor of Commerce or Business with a Major in Accounting
  • Professional Accounting Designation Required, e.g., Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) or Certified Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Experience in planning and forecasting methodologies
  • Experience in financial reporting for large, diverse organizations
  • Experience in analyzing accounting issues and preparing management reports
  • Excellent financial acumen and writing skills
  • Strong organization and planning skills
  • Customer and results-oriented and committed to meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate finance and accounting concepts both verbally and in writing
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta utility regulation is considered an asset
