Department Overview

International Financial Reporting Standard 17, Insurance Contracts (IFRS 17) is a regulatory project addressing the accounting standard issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in May 2017 and finalized in June 2020. The intent of IFRS 17 is to create uniformity in insurance accounting and measurement across different international geographies and jurisdictions. IFRS 17 sets out new requirements redefining recognition, measurement and disclosures of insurance business and will add transparency in reporting and comparability. These requirements apply to all TD Insurance (TDI) lines of businesses – General Insurance (GI), Life and Health (L&H) and TD Reinsurance Barbados (TDRB). TDI will report insurance results for the first time under the new standard starting November 1, 2023, with restatement of comparatives in accordance with the transition provisions in the standard. This is a large project requiring strong cross-functional collaboration. It will encompass significant business and accounting policy, system and process changes.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance or other related area of study
  • CPA or other related professional Finance designation
  • Minimum 10+ years of related Finance experience
  • Ability to plan, share and implement change initiatives
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders and maintain relationships
  • Deep insurance industry understanding
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas succinctly and clearly

Job Description

  • Business resource accountable to the Business Owner and Subject Matter Expert for all Finance related matters for the IFRS 17 Solution implementation and all other IFRS 17 related workstreams; enables the Business Owner to achieve the overall vision
  • Understands TDI’s General Insurance, Life & Health and TD Re Barbados businesses, and identifies strategic decisions related to IFRS 17 and facilitates decision making with Business Owner
  • Identifies alignment of decisions with business case and documents risks and issues appropriately
  • Facilitates the development of mitigation plans for risks and issues identified at the umbrella level
  • Provides analysis and recommendation to Business Owner for approval of Accounting Policies and Business Requirements across workstreams that are related to Finance topics
  • Ensures TD’s Finance requirements are reflected in all the IFRS 17 Solutions being implemented, across all IFRS 17 workstreams.
  • Ensures that all TD’s Finance requirements included in SOWs (where applicable) are delivered by the vendors and in accordance with the accounting standard.
  • Single point of escalation for workstream Product Owners and provides guidance to workstream Product Owners within the pods in making decisions related to Finance topics in alignment with industry bodies (e.g., CIA)
  • Plans, composes, distributes, and tracks work from his or her level down
  • Prioritizes order in which work is to be done and coordinates work across multiple IFRS 17 workstreams
  • Facilitates and actively participates in sprint demos
  • Provides support in managing communication to Regulators and key stakeholders
  • Supports defining of business change needs to shape change management strategy required for the successful implementation of the new suite of systems and benefits delivery
  • Supports change management activities, guiding training and communications in alignment with Business strategy, and supports the post IFRS 17 implementation planning and related activities
  • Support identification of interdependencies between workstreams and works closely with Delivery Lead to ensure they are managed
  • Participate in maintaining the program scope and understand the strategic / operational implications on impacted TDI and Bank systems (i.e., Data).
