The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $74,712- $84,087 starting salary determined by the PEA .
Performance range: starting salary to max of $98,049 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Pension Services administers the University of Victoria Combination Pension Plan, Money Purchase Pension Plan, Staff Pension Plan, and Supplemental Benefit Arrangement, and provides support to the plans’ governing bodies.
This position is the department expert for all accounting functions and financial reporting standards related to the University’s pension plans. As the Financial Accountant for the department, key responsibilities include ensuring the accuracy and integrity of plan financial accounting records, financial statements, calculations of various rates of return, and the quantitative portions of various reports to members, boards or committees; determining asset allocation; monitoring investment funds for compliance with policies; preparing tax and other regulatory reports; development and implementation of financial processes and internal controls; and budget management.
This position will be the key resource and contact within Pension Services for senior management, auditors, plan actuaries, governing bodies (pension boards and committees) on accounting matters and provides advice, consultation and recommendations on accounting, internal controls, financial reporting, tax and related issues.
Job Requirements
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, and must have a professional accounting designation (CPA (CGA, CA, CMA)) plus 6 years of progressive accounting experience, culminating at a senior level including experience preparing financial statements, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with record keeping and financial reporting for pension plans and investment funds would be an asset
In addition:
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards, financial controls, legislation (eg: Income Tax Act, Excise Tax Act, etc.) and their application to pension plan financial accounting and reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to deal with external service providers.
- Ability to accomplish tasks or projects within strict deadlines, in collaboration with other department staff and with minimal supervision.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills including spreadsheets, databases and word processing software.
- Understanding of investment concepts, calculations and reporting. Previous investment experience preferred.
