Job description: Big Time Decent Productions Inc. is an innovative independent production company based in Vancouver, B.C., creating factual and scripted content with a global reach. We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join us. This is a three-month part-time contract with the potential to be a permanent position.

Reporting directly to the Executive Producer/Owner, the Financial Controller serves as a key member of the leadership team, and leads the accounting and finance department. Works closely with the Executive Producer and the production team, and advises them on matters related to finance, tax credits, audit, and compliance. Main responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the full-cycle accounting of the parent company and subsidiaries: overseeing day-to-day accounting activities including bi-weekly accounts payable and payroll, client and intercompany billings, and cash flow management;
  • Implement corporate budget planning and forecasting process. Monitor financial performance, identify, and report material variances, and prepare monthly financial reports for the Executive Producer;
  • Work with the production team to ensure timely and accurate cost reports, and to review and address cost items that may negatively impact the production budget, and to advise production management on matters related to maximizing tax credits and other funding incentives;
  • Establish rapport and build strong relationships with the banks, and to oversee the loan facilities of both corporate and production entities, and day-to-day cash management;
  • Lead through all required audit processes (of all productions); work closely with external auditors and tax accountants to ensure tax filings are processed in a timely manner;
  • Discuss with the production team and analyze production finance and administrative requirements (of both public and private funding agencies) for new projects (productions), and to work with external counsel, lenders, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure proper setup;
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory & taxation requirements (sales taxes, EHT annual report, WSBC, payroll remittances, T4As, union dues and remittance, etc.), and act as key liaison to all government bodies and unions, and external auditors;
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the finance & accounting staff; hire and train staff.

The technical stuff

  • An undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, management, or commerce, CPA preferred (candidate with an undergraduate degree and equivalent experience will be considered);
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting, and at least three years’ experience in a financial management/supervisor capacity;
  • Work experience within the television and film industry;
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Excellent time management with a can-do attitude;
  • Effective written and verbal communication;
  • Strong research skill;
  • Tech savvy- experienced in QuickBooks Pro Premier (desktop) or other accounting software, MS 365 (Excel intermediate level), MS Teams, Adobe Acrobat (PDF), MS Business OneDrive, Google Suite, and Cloud work environment.
