The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $71,308 – $80,259 maximum starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement

Performance range: starting salary to max of $93,586 is available through annual performance increases

Job Summary

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. Facilities Management reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of campus buildings.

The University of Victoria has a long history of leadership in sustainability. Facilities Management as stewards of the campus is an integral part of that leadership. The Waste Reduction Manager improves existing and develops new waste reduction initiatives campus wide in order to support the Sustainability Action Plan waste diversion rate goals. The Manager also manages the operation of the Waste Reduction Unit whose primary responsibility is to collect, dispose, monitor and measure all waste and recycling on campus. The Manager reports to the Director of Customer Service & Program Integration. The position interacts directly with faculty, staff, students, ancillary customers and an advisory board informing them on matters pertaining to waste reduction on campus. The position manages resources to ensure that Service Levels are maintained across campus. The position also prepares and manages the overall Waste Reduction budget, cost to service operating models, capital equipment purchases and oversees Labour Relations within the unit.

Job Requirements

This position requires an undergraduate degree in Science or Engineering and at least 5 years’ experience in supervision in management of waste management, managing a service-oriented workforce and/or related service delivery organization.

In addition this position requires:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operational processes, legislation, regulations, programs and by-laws that govern the industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Management Practices or Human Resource Management
  • Recent successful management experience obtained in a unionized organization
  • Experience delivering training
  • Experience applying health and safety procedures
  • Effective use of standard office hardware and software including MS Office (excel, word, outlook) and database applications (computerized maintenance management systems)
  • Effective use of modern business administration processes including financial/budget administration and basic accounting procedures

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
