As the Payroll Manager, you will have the opportunity to

The salary range for this position is:
Recruitment range: $68,097 – $76,641 starting salary determined by the PEA .
Performance range: starting salary to max of $89,370 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Payroll, the Payroll Operations Manager has responsibility for running and interpreting payroll submissions for over 10,000 employees a year and interpreting UVic’s 6 distinct collective agreements resulting in an over $350 million annual payroll. This role is also responsible for managing related processes, including pre/post-payroll processes for checking data integrity, pay reporting to the CRA and Service Canada as well as other compliance reporting.
Business process changes, efficiency initiatives and strategies that focus on service excellence are key components of the role.
This position provides supervision for 3-4 customer service clerks, co-op students and is backup for the Appointments Operations Manager.
Job Requirements
This position requires an undergraduate degree in a related field, a payroll or accounting designation
(CPM, CPA), and five (5) years of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
In addition, this position requires:
- Working in a large complex unionized organization.
- Experience applying payroll policies and practices, and experience translating provincial and federal legislation into payroll procedures and practices.
- Exceptional organizational skills, including ability to manage multiple projects and operational requirements, determine priorities, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong computer application skills (data extraction and manipulation), and a solid understanding of systems and processes, including ability to form basic queries from databases and develop reports.
- Advanced problem-solving skills and creativity to develop solutions in an increasingly complex payroll and financial environment.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel and ability to analyze and synthesize complex information.
- Strong presentation skills, including ability to create and deliver training.
- Superior communication skills, including ability to communicate in a respectful and professional manner with the administrative and academic departments and with university faculty and staff regarding their pay, benefit deductions and taxation.
- Ability to be independent, objective and apply strong professional judgment.
